Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Nick in Pleasanton, CA
We began by reviewing one additional math, one writing, and two reading sections the student did last week. He was able to easily spot most math errors after more carefully reading the question. For writing, we concentrated on analyzing sentence error questions to pinpoint questions for which "No Error" is the correct answer. The student's reading comprehension score was excellent, so we spent some time discussing vocabulary for sentence completion. We wrapped up with a discussion of goals for the practice essay he will write over the next week.

SAT Tutoring review by Philip in Pleasanton, CA
We began by discussing preparation strategies for the essay and vocabulary in general. We also did a complete practice section for all 3 sections. Reading went well, especially the passage-based questions. Vocab prep will only improve the sentence completion questions. Math went really well. He knows all the math concepts, it's just a matter of doing more practice to familiarize himself with the types of questions the SAT asks. Writing also went well. The trickiest questions were illogical comparison. We talked about how to spot them and make sure that he can correct the errors.

SAT Tutoring review by Alexandra in Pleasanton, CA
In our last session, we reviewed a little Math and several Sentence Error Identification practice questions. Both students have strong writing and grammar skills. They missed far fewer questions than on any of the previous practice sets. The suggestion I left them with was to study some idiomatic phrases. I think they will do very well on the SAT next weekend.

SAT Tutoring review by Courtney in Pleasanton, CA
In our session we went over PSAT scores for both students, specifically focusing on areas that were most challenging. The first student had excellent results in all sections, but had her lowest score in math. Oppositely, the second student's best score was in math, but also had excellent overall results. Because the SAT is coming up quickly for the first student, we used this session to review the critical strategies for selecting answers or skipping questions. We also did a comprehensive overview of the essay, which is the main difference from the PSAT. I left the students with tips for the next week and things they could do to prepare for the SAT.

SAT Tutoring review by Anna in Pleasanton, CA
This was my third session with the student today and we jumped right into a section of math that she had done as homework. We spent a good amount of time going over this section, but I feel that this was time well spent because I tried to show her how to think critically about problems if she doesn't immediately know how to solve them. We then switched to critical reading. At the very end, we went over a sentence improvement section and she showed definite implementation of new skills and improvement!

SAT Tutoring review by Rachel in Pleasanton, CA
In this session, I had the student focus on strategies for the Writing section and his timing within that section. I began by having him respond to an essay prompt within the allotted time given, just as he would on the day of the test. Before he began, we discussed his strategies for writing an effective essay, mainly working on a solid thesis and remembering to check for grammatical errors. He had a few minutes to spare, but was reluctant to check over his work. If he had spent the time to check it over, he might have caught the numerous grammar issues that he made, so this was a good lesson for him when we went over the essay afterwards. I then had him practice a Writing multiple choice section within the allotted time, focusing on maintaining focus and eliminating answer choices. He made some errors, but quickly saw where he went wrong when we went over the answers together.
