Varsity Tutors helped our son raise his SAT over 100 points, and his ACT 3 points, which resulted in being accepted at all of the schools he applied to. We were very happy with our instructor and will definitely utilize VT again for our other children.

Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Esther in Irving, TX
We worked on a critical reading section together, practicing the first paragraph, first sentences of body paragraphs, and conclusion reading technique. We also tried bypassing the reading altogether and going straight to the questions. We then worked on some vocab--what to study, how to study it. She will take a full, timed practice exam for homework.

SAT Tutoring review by Cynthia in Irving, TX
The student took the SAT a couple of weeks ago, so we talked about what he think he did well on and what he wants to focus more one now. He felt really good about the essay, which was great since we worked so much on that, but he wants to keep working on PBR and also on the math sections with the Free Response questions. During our session we did two math sections and he did really well on them and finished with plenty of time left. His progress has been very good in PBR, especially the last half of those sections, so now we will shift our focus to the vocab and shorter passages.

SAT Tutoring review by John in Irving, TX
We continued to focus on improving in the math section, in particular we practiced algebraic and geometric concepts that will come up on the SAT. The student improved proficiency with both. We also worked on improving the writing multiple choice, primarily identify sentence errors and improving paragraphs.

SAT Tutoring review by Molly in Irving, TX
The student and I spent the first hour reviewing a paper she's working on for English. The second hour was spent working on SAT prep. She recently took the PSAT and expressed some concern about the time limits and pacing. Pacing is definitely something we'll work on as she gets closer to test-taking time. She is doing great and shows a lot of motivation.

SAT Tutoring review by Kim in Irving, TX
The student and I discussed the SAT test, the three sections, and the purpose of each section. We talked about the SAT as a predictor of academic success. We looked at a sample essay prompt and broke down the question into parts to examine its purpose. I stressed the fact that the essay is a persuasive essay, i.e., requiring the writer to take a position on the prompt and to defend the position with evidence. She had not yet created an account with SAT, so we began that process. I stressed that she would need to submit her application to take the test immediately to avoid the upcoming deadline, and that there would be a late fee. For the next session, I asked her to read the first three sections of the SAT practice book, do the practice tests at the end of each section, and to draft an essay on the prompt given in the practice session.

The student took his vocabulary test, then we went over the union, intersection, inverse math concept to explain a math diagnostic test question We then went over his diagnostic test, taken under no time restriction to measure his accuracy. It improved a little from his last test score, but I expected a greater improvement since when we go over the test questions together. He appears to have a good understanding and answer most questions correctly the first time. We reviewed the test partially and will pick it up next week, but I asked him to go over his wrong answers and identify the reason for his errors. I also assigned him more vocabulary words.
