Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Abigail in Concord, NC
In this session, the student and I worked on the reading section of the SAT. We spent a lot of time reviewing one particular reading section (it's the hardest reading section that I have in my materials, but she did well!), and I asked her to finish the last section we worked on before our next meeting.

SAT Tutoring review by Ryan in Concord, NC
The student and I continued our work on the writing and reading portion of the SAT. We went over some of the basic rules and questions she missed. Toward the end of the session, she was scoring much better on each section. On the reading portion, she struggled a bit more with timing and finding the correct answers. After the first passage, I walked her through the next passage in a detailed manner. Then we talked about ways to work through the reading and find the correct answers as quickly as possible. We will continue to work on this next session.

We covered the Additional Topics portion of the math section today, focusing on geometry and the formulas and properties that would be most useful to know by heart. We constructed a list of common squares, cubes, powers of two, various formulas of 2D geometry, and special right triangles. The student struggled to recall some of the special right triangles, like 30-60-90, and also in solving multi-step geometry problems. We also finished practice exam sections for reading and writing. We started a list of vocabulary that the student found unfamiliar in the questions and will continue to review those. In advance of our next session, the student will print some old SAT full exams for additional practice problems.

SAT Tutoring review by Jennifer in Concord, NC
The student and I worked through four reading comprehension passages, with a particular focus on fictional prose and comparative passages. We worked through two of the passages (including the comparative) on a paragraph level, with emphasis on passage development, paragraph flow, and word choice. We used process of elimination, key words, and context clues to work through questions related to character attitudes, arguments, and evidence. I assigned the student math homework to be completed before the next session.

SAT Tutoring review by Alice in Concord, NC
We worked through questions in the first three sections of the SAT, including all of the first math section. We discussed some strategies for addressing the paired questions in the reading section, and reviewed some grammar. For math, we solved some of the problems the student got wrong and I was able to determine what math she needs to work on moving forward. The student has an excellent attitude, and is a delight to work with.

SAT Tutoring review by Omar in Concord, NC
We went over the practice algebra assessment that I left with them last time. I found that they were still struggling with some algebra concepts such as factoring quadratic equations and identifying functions from a graph and set of points. I left some practice science SAT passages for them to work on. Next week I plan to bring practice problems on the above mentioned concepts and finish going over the algebra assessment we did not finish.
