Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Joanne in Broken Arrow, OK
Today, we only worked on 'averages' while working on mathematics. We discussed about the concept of how to calculate averages, and what else we can calculate with given averages. We worked on multiple questions relevant to averages that were tweaked in various ways. I asked the student to re-solve all the questions we have worked on so far. In particular, I asked the student to teach all the 'average' questions to a friend or a family member.

SAT Tutoring review by Christi in Broken Arrow, OK
We reviewed through a section of Reading trying the new method of him writing out his responses and then going to find them in the MC answers. We then tried it with English and decided on a different test taking strategy. We reviewed through the format for the Essay Writing and went through a sample prompt. He will complete this timed essay for the next session.

SAT Tutoring review by Jacob in Broken Arrow, OK
In this session, we worked on the SAT math and grammar sections. For the math, we went over a number of non-calculator questions. While he was pretty comfortable with a number of the questions, it seems that exponents and radicals were tripping him up a bit. When squaring one terms within a radical, he accidentally squared what was inside the radical, leading to confusion. We also discussed logical approaches for solving and rationalizing a problem in more hands-on ways, so that he does not have to use abstract algebra for every problem. While he seems pretty strong with word problems and geometry, it seems that algebra is where he could use the most work. For the writing, he had a bit more difficulty than he did during the previous session, as he did not read carefully in a couple of instances. By sounding out each possible answer, he'll have a better time finding the best choice.

The student performed well. We reviewed the strategy for annotating passages. We then worked on real SAT passages. He did well, so we moved on to the timed passages. He struggled more with the timed passages, but still did well overall. We will work on them more before the next session. He caught his own mistakes and used the majority of the strategies.

We looked at similarities between the top scoring essays, and adopted those structures and strategies for use in essay writing. SAT Tutoring review by Kyle in Broken Arrow, OK
The student and I started the session reviewing one of the practice essays that she had written in a timed format in order to prepare for the SAT. She did fairly well on it, but she could use more argumentation to support her claims. We then turned to sentence completion, doing a few more practice quizzes and working through some of the strategies for answering these questions when unsure of the vocabulary. She's improved on this subtest, which is great to see. We turned to reading comprehension quizzes, on which she performed well, and then we rounded out the lesson with a science article where I asked her to give interpretations of various aspects. She thoroughly answered questions and analyzed the piece.
