Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Tranika in Long Beach, CA
Mom relayed information from student's teacher about specific areas for focus. Time spent during this session specifically covered his reading comprehension homework assignment. I noticed that while he's able to read through a passage, often times he doesn't fully understand what he's read. At the end of each passage/paragraph, I asked questions or prompted his review and explanation of what he just read. Seeing his assignments given for the rest of the week, I didn't leave him with any extra practice. I did take the "focus list" passed on from his teacher, and roughly outlined a plan for future sessions that will focus on each item listed, spending more or less time on each area based on progress shown.

We started reading a book about Al Capone, and we will start reading Lord of the Flies on Monday. We looked up the definitions of his vocabulary words he is to know by next Friday. I also gave him five more words.

We started off working on his homework (reading logic and wordplay). Then we worked on adding, multiplying, and dividing fractions and multiplying strategies. We finished by reading "Spy Kids" - I had him read, then we would both read together during difficult sentences and from time to time so that he could associate the correct pronunciation of multi-syllabic words and not lose interest in the story. We also drew pictures of parts of the story narrative that he couldn't picture in his head (U shaped buildings, narrative perspective). We will finish his homework packet and read more of the story on Tuesday.

Reading Tutoring review by Morganne in Long Beach, CA
Worked with the student on reading different levels of books. She is very comfortable with understanding the words and basic story line at levels l, m and n. She is able to go back and sound them out when prompted. The biggest difference for her that I've observed between m and n is understanding the complexity of how it is written (use of figurative language, plot development etc.). She has most ownership of these ideas at-level and below, and she enjoys reading those books more as a result. I will continue to work on understanding more figurative and abstract concepts as we continue together.

During our session, the student and I worked on identifying tone as well as techniques used by writers to create a flow within their work. We discussed how this could assist reading comprehension and speed. He and I also went over his project for his long term school project.

Reading Tutoring review by Faye in Long Beach, CA
Today the student wrote two process papers. One was describing how to ride a bike. His second assignment was to explain how to play a video game. He did a very good job on that one! He included each step, each direction, and used good vocabulary.
