Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Reading Tutoring review by Claire in Kenosha, WI
At this session, I worked with the student on the book Where the Red Fern Grows. The student had an assignment and needed to answer questions about the book; we discussed what she remembered having read so far, and read chapter 6 together. She understood the chapter well, but some of the events did not seem to fit with what she'd told me about the previous chapters, so we went back and started chapter 5 together. This helped clear up her confusion. We also discussed the author's use of hyperbole, which I introduced as another type of figurative language, where the author writes something that "didn't happen" in order to make a point or dramatize a passage.

Today we reviewed the sight words from the previous session. The student knew all but two of the words. We began a new list and incorporated those two words into the list. These words were a little more challenging for the student, but after reviewing the words a few times she started to get the hang of it.

We continued the student's reading log. He started a nonfiction text about Civil Aircraft / airplanes. It seems a bit complicated for him in regards to the vocabulary. We spent time discussing what he read to ensure comprehension and determine what to write for his log. He has been writing down his assignments and "no homework" if it applies.

Reading Tutoring review by Nicole in Kenosha, WI
Today the student and I worked on irony as she is still struggling with this form of figurative language in narrative. We did an exercise using Charles Dickens and we also came up with our own stories and put irony into them. I think that this really helped her get a better grasp on the concept of irony but there is still more practice needed for her to be able to understand it better in narrative. We also worked on metaphor in poetry and metaphor in narrative. She is doing well with understanding metaphor. For our metaphor exercise we read Irish proverbs and she enjoyed "solving the puzzle" of what they could mean. She is really starting to grasp that there is more than one meaning for cultural phrases. This will help her with reading books in 9th grade.

Reading Tutoring review by Michael in Kenosha, WI
The student and I did a close reading of a passage from a book she has never read. We carefully picked apart the passage, learning about the different elements in a paragraph to notice for a passage analysis. We then created a strong thesis for her argument.
