Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

How can a tutor assist you in conquering Reading?

Varsity Tutors' educational directors can help students in Hempstead, NY, find independent, experienced reading tutors. It's vital for children to develop confidence in reading as soon as possible in order to try to succeed in their studies. However, if a concept taught in the classroom doesn't get enough coverage or the pace of the class is too overwhelming, a student can fall behind and become a reluctant reader, leading to issues in all classes and a growing achievement gap.

If your child is struggling, or even if you just want to give him or her a head start against the rest of the class, reach out to us. We can match you with a reading tutor in Hempstead who will adapt their lessons to your child's individual needs. After asking you about the student's needs, challenges, and goals, we will pass the information along to the chosen tutor to create lesson plans. Fluency and accuracy can be built through a variety of learning approaches, according to the methods that will be both most effective and most fun for your child. Sessions may focus on topics like word recognition, decoding, phonemic awareness, story mapping, summarizing, and overall reading comprehension. An experienced tutor can determine what speed will work best for your child and which learning aids may be most effective. The easiest way to get kids excited about reading is to choose books that speak to their interests, and your child's tutor could help him or her select books that could make turning the page feel like opening the door to a whole new world, establishing a love of reading for fun and personal enrichment.

Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Julie in Hempstead, NY
We began with a short listing activity. We learned about some writing conventions: italics, parentheses, commas, and dashes. We then read a short biography about Mohandas Gandhi. The student's final writing assignment is to write 7-10 sentences about his grandfather.

Reading Tutoring review by Brittany in Hempstead, NY
In this session the student read the story "The Race" aloud. I asked him the discussion questions at the end of the story and we talked about key concepts, primarily the ideas of hypothesizing, story climax and rising action. He has an exam coming up over several of the stories he has read in class this term. The Race is one that will be on the exam, but had not already been covered in class.

Reading Tutoring review by Susan in Hempstead, NY
We began our session by reviewing the questions to be answered and sat down to begin reading several chapters. The student prefers to highlight and write down his answers as he reads vs. writing all the responses at the end of the reading. It is working out fine with this book because the chapters are so short, 2-4 pages long. He also recalls previous details in the story and is doing a really good job of building on the details to make more sophisticated connections. He needs significantly less guidance than our first book so I feel like he's made great strides.

Reading Tutoring review by Denise in Hempstead, NY
We worked on phonetic skills, learning to sound out regular and irregular pronunciations. The student showed solid ability to infer pronunciations from one word to another. She was able to read most of a Kindergarten level book by herself, with aid in phonetic exercises. Though this will be the most challenging aspect for her to master, she shows good retention/comprehension skills and with practice I am confident she'll be able to read more confidently on her own.

Reading Tutoring review by Emily in Hempstead, NY
Today the student and I finished her reading and math assignments for the semester. She took a post-test and completed it along with her assigned reading/phonics workbook. We also completed the last of her review for math covering shapes, capacity and length, as well as mental math. The rest of the time was spent on writing sentences and finishing the summary for her milestone assignment. During our next session, we will be working on her poster that goes along with the summary for the book she's reading.

Reading Tutoring review by Samuel in Hempstead, NY
We worked on reading together again, writing, and some minor grammar. We worked on subjects, verbs, and some punctuation. We did make progress with the speed of decoding the phonetics of words. I also noticed that there are some consonant blends with which the student has trouble, so I will be working on some speech-pathologist-esque intervention strategies like nonsense words and working on muscle memory.
