How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is a test used as a measure of students' preparation for taking the SAT. Students who perform well on the test may also qualify for scholarships. The PSAT can be taken once a year, usually in the fall, and it measures students' capabilities in evidence-based reading, writing and language, and math. If you are aiming to earn a National Merit Scholarship, or you are wondering where you need more work to prepare for the SAT, you will want to do your best on the PSAT. A skilled tutor can help you study. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a PSAT tutor in San Diego, California.

There are three versions of the PSAT. The PSAT/NMSQT is the exam that awards National Merit Scholarships. Students take it in the autumn of their 10th or 11th grade. The PSAT 10 covers the same information as the PSAT/NMSQT, but it can't be used as a qualifier for the scholarships. The PSAT 8/9 provides a baseline measurement of how well the student is progressing and is taken in the spring or fall of the 8th or 9th grade. All of the versions of the test are taken in two hours and 45 minutes and have two components: evidence-based reading and writing and math. No matter which PSAT you are planning to take, a San Diego PSAT tutor can help you prepare for exam day.

PSAT Tutoring review by Trey in San Diego, CA
The student and I went over her errors on sections 1 and 2 in a practice test. We focused on the diction errors I sent her last week, and we also reviewed vocabulary. She is finishing sections 3 and 4 and plans to purchase a prep book.

PSAT Tutoring review by Laurel in San Diego, CA
At this session, we continued our math review from last time, and got into Critical Reading (CR) strategies. For the math, we reviewed the concepts covered last time, then worked on fractional exponents, roots, exponent rules, and functions + their graphs. From the student's performance on the verbal practice session assigned last time, it was clear that we needed to brush up on CR questions involving line references and passage tone. I introduced him to the 4-part CR passage structure, which we will go into more detail with in the next session. He seems otherwise solid on reading questions. His homework for Friday is: finish and grade the other 4 sections in the first practice exam in his booklet, 7 vocabulary words, and to "be obnoxious" about the "second" meaning of "pedestrian" (i.e. ordinary, unexceptional).

PSAT Tutoring review by Cheryl in San Diego, CA
The student hit the "superior" range on all three parts of his practice test. The written section has definitely improved since we reviewed not just the grammar rules, but what to look for and strategies for picking out the right answer. After going over the few questions he got wrong, we went through the math information in the book, just to confirm that he knew all the math being tested and to help him learn how to decide what strategies to use in solving problems.

PSAT Tutoring review by Rudy in San Diego, CA
The student was able to finish most of the practice exam by the beginning of our session. She just had to complete a few reading passages. I scored her exam and she showed a slight improvement in all of her subjects. We spent most of the session going over math. We reviewed more geometry, probability and logic word problems. I also charged her with the task to make vocabulary note cards.

PSAT Tutoring review by Kristyn in San Diego, CA
First, we did a vocabulary review/oral quiz. Next we discussed the sections the student completed for me during the past week. She did well with the passages in the critical reading section and seems to be getting better at the sentence completion sections. We then moved on to the writing section. We worked through some identifying sentence errors and sentence improvement questions, talking about each grammar rule that the questions addressed.
