How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The score each student receives on the SAT will be sent out with their college applications, and it can have an important impact on whether or not they are accepted into the school of their choice. That is why it's imperative that students study ahead of time for the test. One of the best approaches to study for the SAT is by taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). The PSAT is structured similarly to the SAT, so taking it is an excellent chance for students to get an idea of what the SAT will be like. While students' PSAT scores aren't typically sent out with their college applications, it is still smart to study for the test, and it is used to identify National Merit Scholars. Studying for the PSAT will give students a great idea of how much studying they will need to do for the actual SAT. Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Michael in Newport Beach, CA
This is to be the student's final session before she takes the SAT on Saturday. We did a quick review of the supplies to bring and the foods to eat during the test. We completed our work from last week which was reviewing the Math sections on the previous SAT she had taken. This time we spent more time on the problems of greater difficulty, and problems that were based in algebra. We reviewed key formulas, such as the slope formula and area/circumference of a circle. The student should do well on Saturday. She should remember to breathe, and take it question by question!

Since this was our last session, I asked the student what he would like to focus on. He said he would like to focus on math -- specifically, harder problems and geometry and word problems. We reviewed test taking strategies as we went through the questions. At the end, we discussed plans for the test.

This was our final meeting before the exam. The student and I reviewed strategies for each section of the test and went over Practice Test #2 (which he took last week, timed). He felt comfortable with the pacing of the test and he used almost all of the strategies. He will learn some more vocabulary and do some more timed practice problems before the test on Saturday. Good luck!

PSAT Tutoring review by Juan in Newport Beach, CA
The student and I worked on verbal and math. We reviewed our previous set of vocabulary flash cards, and then added to it following a practice section. For math, we began by going through some practice problems. We identified a couple of principles that she needs more practice with (ratios/proportions, percentages) and worked through a couple of each.

PSAT Tutoring review by Benjamin in Newport Beach, CA
Started by reviewing a practice test he completed prior to the session; was solid in every section. Went through the math section and the process for the questions he got correct to ensure he was going through everything correctly. After being assured of this, went on with more practice vocabulary and sentence completion questions, at which he was much better at using process of elimination to arrive at his answer. Finished with discussion of the essay and how to look for his own voice and achieve proper flow within his essay.

PSAT Tutoring review by Kewanta in Newport Beach, CA
The student's state assessment math test is in a few weeks. Today we only worked on released questions from 3 out of 4 reporting categories: numerical representation, algebraic expressions, and geometry and measurement. She is still struggling with confidence. Also, I noticed that she is relying on mental math to solve the problem. During this time, I stressed the importance of problem solving strategies such as underline the question, circle key words, take notes next to the pictures, wipe out incorrect answers and explain why they are not the answer, and answer the question and explain why it is correct. I left her with some homework.
