How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

If you're currently studying for the Preliminary SAT (PSAT), Varsity Tutors could help you make your study sessions more productive by finding you a tutor in Centennial. Rather than trying to puzzle out what the test will look like, you'll get specific information designed to fully prepare you for each section. Your tutor can even run diagnostic assessments aimed at finding out which portions of the test will be a problem for you and then design lessons to address those areas.

The overall pacing, however, will be entirely up to you. You might be able to slow things down to get your questions answered on the spot, or speed things up to gloss over easier topics. We can locate a PSAT tutor in Centennial, CO, who will complement your learning style. If you prefer studying by rote memory, your instructor can highlight the types of algebraic equations you'll run into and then help you commit them to memory. If you're more interested in learning how to creatively analyze passages, your tutor can show you what aspects to look for and how to harmonize them in the writing section.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Brian in Centennial, CO
In this session, we talked about what he read from "East of Eden," covering such topics as pacing, writing styles, and ideas presented at the beginning of the story. We then did practice problems to cover main-idea questions from a website. I assigned him more reading and practice problems.

PSAT Tutoring review by Nora in Centennial, CO
The student is open to trying new approaches on the Reading Section. I encouraged her to try each technique that I suggested before ruling it out and reminded her that any technique which did not yield better results for her she could absolutely stop using. As we worked through sample passages, particularly longer passages and paired passages, she became more comfortable with varying her approach and more adept at the strategies we discussed.

PSAT Tutoring review by Maya in Centennial, CO
The student took a practice test yesterday, and we went over the questions that were challenging for her. It looks like she made amazing improvement with the vocabulary sections (she said doing flashcards had helped). She also said that it had been helpful to cross out clauses in the writing section, as we had discussed, and she had no trouble with that. Some of the longer passages had proved difficult, so we went through two other passages together. We talked about marking up the passages according to the questions so that it would be easier to keep an eye out for the right answer. She is doing an awesome job!

PSAT Tutoring review by Suzanne in Centennial, CO
We covered critical reading, vocabulary, and sentence/grammatical structure. She is still learning how to do better with vocabulary words as well as reading passages that don't interest her. However, she is able to get most vocabulary words from context and narrow down the answers to the two best ones.

PSAT Tutoring review by Alexandra in Centennial, CO
We began with reviewing general test taking strategies geared towards the PSAT/SAT, and what the student's areas of weakness were and techniques to combat those areas. We then did a practice critical reading section together, practicing such techniques as: narrowing down answer choices, when to guess, and identifying clues provided in the question itself. We also began a running vocabulary list of words we ran across that he was unfamiliar with, so that he can have a list to review and refer back to.

PSAT Tutoring review by Rebecca in Centennial, CO
The student and I took an SSAT Upper Level test together and I monitored her comprehension and response selection by asking her questions. Her biggest obstacles are in new vocabulary and in being able to organize a text in her head to locate the main idea. Both of these can be worked on in future sessions. After taking a practice test together, we read and I checked for comprehension of a short story and we ended with vocab work. She was given vocab work for tomorrow's session.
