Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Ami in Mount Vernon, NY
We went over the student's pre-calc test from last week that covered hyperbolas, parabolas, ellipses, and parametric equations. She understands the material.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Katia in Mount Vernon, NY
In our session, the student and I focused on his pre-calculus class. He was having some difficulty with the concept of matrices, so we started halfway through chapter 7, when matrices were first introduced. We talked about how to get matrices in Row-Echelon form. Then, using back substitution, we were able to solve the system of equations that the matrix represented. We also discussed how to make a matrix into reduced row-echelon form, in which case you don't even need to back-substitute to find your answers. We then talked about addition and subtraction and multiplication with matrices and how to find the inverse of a matrix. He found these concepts confusing at first, but by the end, he could solve the matrices without too much trouble!

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Sean in Mount Vernon, NY
We went through the student's review sheet, poring over the intricacies of each problem (e.g. the foci, vertices, center, asymptotes, eccentricities for each conic type, as well as the definitions of each). She will need some further practice to solidify all of the details, but we will do that on Wednesday before her test. I sent her some additional practice / an equation summary for her to go over before our next session.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Dae in Mount Vernon, NY
The student was having some difficulty with the concept of parametric equations. We reviewed some examples and I explained parametric equations using sample questions. By the end of the session, he seemed to have a better grasp of parametric equations, and I recommended he go over some practice problems in his spare time, mostly because it's a tricky subject. I'm thinking that we should do some review for next session.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Erin in Mount Vernon, NY
Today we reviewed the concept of even and odd functions which the student has been reviewing in class. We determined how to find out if a graph is even or odd and what these graphs usually look like. We also looked ahead to discuss briefly what his class will be doing next. He has been doing really well with the most recent chapters including functions and trigonometry, so we will meet again on Sunday. During this time I also talked to him for a short time about his work. He had a couple quick questions about exponential functions.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Michael in Mount Vernon, NY
The student was struggling a little bit with hyperbolas, so we spent most of this session covering them. The difficult part about hyperbolas is that the equations are similar to ellipses, only varying slightly. We went back and forth between ellipses and hyperbolas to make sure the differences were clear. By the end of the session, the student was much more comfortable with hyperbolas and had some extra problems to practice.
