Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Kori in Elk Grove, CA
Continued working on expressions with exponents and logarithms. The homework assignment appeared to be an array of review problems. These included expressing exponential functions as logarithmic functions and the reverse, simplifying expressions using various equality rules, solving for a variable in an equation with exponents or logarithms, and estimated values given the values of the natural log of two quantities. With the remaining time, we worked on a review packet for a test. Topics included transformations of logarithmic equations, and solving problems using the discrete and continuous compounding interest equations. We finished by solving more complex algebraic equations with logarithms similar to the work we did last week. Overall, the student has a good grasp of the logarithm rules, but he does forget that log_b(b^x)=x and that when combining sums/differences of logarithms using the product/quotient rule, that the log goes on the outside of the product/quotient. I suggested that the student practice more problems before the upcoming quiz because he needed some hints or prompting about how to approach many of the problems we worked on.
