During this session, the student and I covered a variety of topics. We went over his vocabulary for his English exam. We also went over his math homework on perfect squares and various word problems. Then, we reviewed for his upcoming science vocab exam on meiosis and cell division.

I watched the student go through his chemical nomenclature homework. He hasn't been having trouble, except for at one point there was a misunderstanding of the Roman numeral in ionic compounds. (It represents the charge of the cation, not the charge of the compound--which is always neutral.) There are also several categories of compounds that have their own special names that fall outside the usual nomenclature system. The most famous of these are water (not "dihydrogen monoxide"), ammonia (not "nitrogen trihydride"), and the hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, propane, etc.). There are a couple of websites trying to persuade people to ban dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO), because it sounds like a dangerous "chemical," supported by phony "facts" such as "it's a major component of acid rains," "it's an industrial solvent," and "it can cause severe burns in its gaseous form."

Today I had the first part of the final exam review session with the student. We went over the lecture that covered the digestive tract, its anatomy, and its physiology. The student already went over all of the content on her own and wanted to review to make sure she understood the concepts well. We will continue reviewing tomorrow and we will complete a practice test and fill in any gaps in knowledge that she might have. She is doing well in her class overall.

The student was very good at identifying what she needed help with. We went through the lecture slides and reviewed, and went more into detail on the things she did not know. She will review the material covered today, and we will review that at the start of next session. She will continue to make flashcards for upcoming material. She should do well, as she is getting help early and is very good at identifying what she is good at and what she needs help with.

Today the student and I reviewed content from Chapter 7 of the ACE manual. He assembled an extensive document of notes in preparation, and we worked through the concepts in his notes. The chapter 7 content that we reviewed focused on postural assessment; factors that contribute to postural error; and how to approach poor posture as a trainer seeking to help his/her client. We also linked content from chapter 7 back to chapter 5 and discussed some of the more elaborate concepts in chapter 5. He and I decided that we need a bit more time to work through the detailed programming concepts in chapter 5, and we intend to focus there for our next tutoring session.
