Physiology Tutoring review by Dayna in Peoria, AZ
Today we did some practice problems from an old exam. This included topics such as: properties of cis versus trans fatty acids, non-covalent interactions of DNA (H-bonding, hydrophobic ,etc.), nucleotides, nucleosides, anomeric carbons, and reducing sugars. The student is sticking to the study schedule that I gave her, and she is doing a great job of preparing for her exam on Wednesday. I am confident that she will do well.

We covered the unique functional groups important in biochemistry: ketones, carboxylic acids, amines, amides, aldehydes, esters, ethers, phosphoryl groups, etc. We examined condensation reactions that are used to build polypeptides through peptide bonds and conversely, hydrolysis reactions which break down peptides into individual monomers. We also reviewed the importance of compartmentation in terms of maintaining environmental stability, the functionality of catalysts within a living system, and the principles of evolution. We observed the general time and size scales in biochemistry.

Physiology Tutoring review by Ethan in Peoria, AZ
During this session, we began by doing some calculus practice problems for the student's upcoming quiz in calculus; the focus is on limits. She felt very comfortable with the subject, and finished each problem very quickly. The majority of the lesson focused on AP Physics. She received her first test back from her Physics Class, and we reviewed it. She had taken this test prior to our first appointment. We went over each problem marked incorrect. She appeared to know some of the basics, but was missing a lot of the key knowledge and tips needed to do well on the test. After reviewing the relationship between velocity, acceleration, and displacement, she felt much more comfortable with the exam. I showed her a couple of different ways to attack the problems. I also reminded her how important it is to find all the information given to you in the problem, and then solve the problem accordingly. I saw a huge improvement from her on the material we covered today.

During today's session, the student and I worked through complex kinematic problems that tested her knowledge of range, trajectories, and vectors. Furthermore, we worked through a problem that involved vectors in three-dimensional space - which was a new topic to her.

Physiology Tutoring review by Lorna in Peoria, AZ
Today the student worked on two additional assignments for her envs-210 class. One involved listening to a 20 minute NPR podcast and writing a two page response answering several questions. Second was another response, this time after reading a scientific paper. She often takes a long time to process information from difficult readings, so this took some time. We also started to read her sociology textbook, which is very informal and casually written. The student definitely took to this book, which is good because she needs to catch up on the first several chapters this week.

Physiology Tutoring review by Shirley in Peoria, AZ
The student has a midterm in Chem tomorrow, so at today's session, we focused on reviewing and making sure that he can do all the questions with confidence. We began with him looking over practice problems given by his professor from the lectures, while I searched for several difficult problems from the book for him to do. When he didn't know how to do some problems or had questions, I helped him. I think this was a good process because it's allowing him to see step by step how a certain answer was derived. After the practice problems, he brought up a practice test, which we worked on together. I'm glad to see that he knew how to do the problems. After the completion of the practice test, we worked on the additional problems I found in his book, and after going over the harder questions, I felt very confident in his grasp of the materials. He is very well prepared and should do well on his midterm tomorrow.
