Physiology Tutoring review by Max in Bucks County, PA
Our session today began by picking up where we left off at the end of last session in practicing application of the gas laws with stoichiometry. The student seemed to have a good feel for it, so after a few different practice questions, and further elaborating on Dalton's law of partial pressures, I decided to move onto introducing some new material. In relation to the kinetic model of gasses that are integral to understanding the limitations and paradigm of the ideal gas law, I introduced the main concepts of reaction kinetics, and the primary factors that determine rates of reaction (i.e. the frequency of molecular collisions). After laying out the basic picture, he already had an intuitive understanding of how concentration of reactants and temperature would affect the rate, so I was only left to elaborate on the definition and function of catalysts. We then spent the remaining chunk of our session practicing determination of the rate law from experimental data, and identifying reactions as zero, 1st, 2nd or 3rd order. I was very impressed by how quickly he was able to catch on and apply the ideas to determining rate laws, and seemed to have a very intuitive understanding of kinetics in general. We may delve into a couple more kinetic concepts for our session tomorrow, but I also feel we might be able to move on to thermodynamics. I'm hoping that by tomorrow, we will have a pretty solid base of material covered for his exam, and from there on out, can focus on drilling different types of problems and reviewing what we've already covered in preparation.
