Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Physiology Tutoring review by Justin in Bellevue, WA
Today, we covered the topics of translation and transcription. We also briefly discussed the topic of genetic engineering and Punnett squares. We did spend about an hour and a half discussing the first two topics first and then did some practice problems in his test prep book he bought. There we went over his answers to one of the quizzes found in the review book and gave a detailed explanation to the answers of the quiz. The student had some trouble remembering the differences between translation and transcription, but seemed to have understood the differences at the end of the session. I did suggest that he go through his textbook and outline the chapters of physiology and the immune system as well as trying to do more practice problems from his book as the AP exam date is in a month.

Physiology Tutoring review by Rikke in Bellevue, WA
Since this was my first session with the student, we started out by talking about her general situation and specific challenges, giving her a chance to express precisely what she is having problems with. By her own account, she feels like she never really got a solid grasp of the fundamentals of chemistry when she was in high school and, as such, has had a hard time following the more advanced material being taught in her current class. She has decided to retake the class over the summer, and is hoping that working with a tutor will prepare her for that. Accordingly, we agreed that we'll spend the next several weeks building up her basic framework to make sure that she has a good understanding of the basics before her summer class starts. To facilitate this, I've suggested that she try to use a slightly more accessible textbook. Additionally, I will provide her with lots of practice problems on fundamentals, such as deducing molecular composition of compounds, writing and balancing chemical equations, stoichiometric calculations, etc. I look forward to working with her, and hope I'll be able to help her succeed.

We reviewed various types of calculations for solutions. Topics included boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, vapor pressure, osmotic pressure, and converting between different expressions of concentrations. Halfway through the session, the student mentioned that she preferred having the problems demonstrated for her to study later rather than being guided through solving the problems herself, so we proceeded that way to cover more material since she has several free periods to use to continue studying before taking the test. I think the student relies on memorizing algorithms instead of thinking about what she can do with the information given, so she is feeling overwhelmed by the number of possible calculations she will be asked to perform. I suggested she approach problems by thinking about what information she needs and how to get there from what she is given, but I am worried that she will have difficulty doing this under the pressure of the test.

Physiology Tutoring review by Cinthia in Bellevue, WA
For the first 20 minutes we reviewed and corrected the two journal assignments I gave him. His attitude is great, and he understands that this is good practice for learning to think in English, rather than translating from Chinese or vice versa. His writing and grammar is already showing improvement with practice, but we are working on getting him in the habit of proof reading and reading aloud to himself before writing in pen. We discussed articles and prepositions and how sentence structure affects story telling. We then worked on his biology homework for the remaining 70 minutes. He let me know that he finally understands the concepts of homozygous and heterozygous genotypes and a few other vocabulary terms that were confusing before. I left him with a journal assignment to write at least one page of something he wants to do here in the U.S. before going home to China for the summer. I also asked him to begin the study skill of making separate notes of any specific confusing words or concepts from any of his subjects so we can study them during our sessions.

Physiology Tutoring review by Talia in Bellevue, WA
She is still catching up on the material for her class. So far, we have covered an introduction to circuits, discussing current and potential difference. Today we covered specifically what happens in a current when we have resistors in parallel versus resistors in series and how this affects the current, potential differences, etc. She picked up the concepts pretty well. I told her that together we will go back and review all the concepts that she has not yet learned so that she is not missing any physics concepts that she may need on the upcoming AP exam.

Physiology Tutoring review by Rehan in Bellevue, WA
We covered significant figures, scientific notation, homogeneous mixtures, and accuracy and precision. We also worked some practice problems to prepare for the exam coming up next week. She was a fast learner and I helped clarify some of the questions she had.
