Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by William in Santa Monica, CA
The student and I met from 11:00 pm to 2:00 pm Thursday March 20th. Today was a long session and we covered both another physics chapter (magnetic fields from an induced current) and reviewed for her chemistry test next Monday (3/24). Her test is on thermodynamics and solubility reactions. We reviewed questions from both of our books for practice in chemistry. For physics, we reviewed the summary sheet that I brought for the next chapter and also completed several problems for the physics chapter as well. Overall, I believe that this was an extremely productive session!

The student started with a new book in her pre-calculus class. The first section her class did was on limits. She and I went over limits, and some basic problems in limits. We then kept going over her SAT Physics test, touching on, and briefly explaining, topics that she has not covered in her physics class.

We reviewed the solutions to some of the problems the student was having trouble with. Topics included gravitation, acceleration below the earth's crust, kinetic and potential energies of rotating systems, angular velocity, and moments of inertia. We will focus on additional practice problems during our next session.

Physics Tutoring review by Christopher in Santa Monica, CA
Today we worked on electricity: current, voltage, resistance, power, work, energy. The student took to it quickly, so we finished her worksheet in half an hour. Then we reviewed her lab from class about lightbulbs. We cut the session to an hour since we moved so fast and wanted to use the extra half hour Wednesday when she will have the practice test we can work on.

Physics Tutoring review by Ashkan in Santa Monica, CA
In this session with the pupil we focused on electrical circuits in physics. We discussed, conceptually, the components of a circuit and how the current flows in general. Next we discussed voltage, current, and resistance. To practice, we completed problems from his packet that required solving for unknown variables and condensing complex circuits. I asked him to review RC circuits for our next session.

Physics Tutoring review by Zachary in Santa Monica, CA
Tonight we covered a study guide for the student's upcoming physics test on Tuesday. We went back over Newton's First Law, and conceptually how it applies to many different situations. I discussed vectors and scalars with him, and how to use the units of a variable to guide your thoughts. We went over each question on the study guide very thoroughly as I won't see him again until after the test. He is very keen on the concepts behind physics and I think he will be fine on the test. After that we discussed some algebra; mainly the real numbers, the number line, and how to think about addition, subtraction, identities, and zero. I related the concept of adding a negative number back to thinking of the numbers as forces and how they partially (or totally) cancel each other out.
