Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by Adam in Denver, CO
The student and I started going over her "modern" unit. We discussed a lot of concepts about atom-level processes like the weak nuclear forces and the wave-particle duality of light. Understanding these ideas should help her make better sense of the equations we'll be going over in the future.

Physics Tutoring review by Chandler in Denver, CO
The student and I did a final review before his AP exam. Topics included rotational dynamics, spring and pendulum harmonic motion problems, conservation of energy and momentum, as well as a combination of topics from throughout the year. We focused on these particular topics to really hone his ability to answer conceptual and practical problems regarding these topics on the AP exam.

Physics Tutoring review by Brian in Denver, CO
The student has constructed her pan flute, so all that remains are to 1) write a paper detailing its construction and 2) become proficient enough to play it for her class. The teacher provided a list of key terms that should appear in her essay, so our session was spent first defining each term, and then discussing how they applied to the pan flute. These terms included frequency, wavelength, pitch, intensity, fundamental, etc. She is going to use the notes taken from our discussion to craft her paper, and then our next session will be proofreading the essay. We also worked on worksheet involving sonar waves. She had some difficulty with the initial instructions, but once we got past that, she was able to complete the assignment with relative ease.

We reviewed for the student's physics final. We got done with about half an exam. He was having some issues with thermodynamics and some electromagnetism stuff, but this is to be expected since it was a while back.

Physics Tutoring review by Ryan in Denver, CO
We worked through more refraction of waves problems (light and sound). It seems her teacher is always giving the students more worksheets to do and has them use their notes as a reference. Our goal is to keep up with these worksheet distributions. She needs to have all the problems completed and understand how to complete them on her own. So far, I believe we have accomplished this, but the true test will be when she gets the results of her next test. During the session, we completed a dozen or so problems from the worksheets, and she had a much better feel for how to do them by the time we finished. We spent the last half hour doing some pre-calculus. Her class is currently working on how to evaluate and find derivatives of functions. She some questions on a couple problems in her notes. She was not sure what the teacher did and wanted me to explain it.

Physics Tutoring review by Andrew in Denver, CO
We went over rotational motion, especially how to use the Parallel Axis Theorem to determine the rotational inertia of an object. The student had a better understanding of the concept after we had worked through several problems. We worked on several more practice problems that covered rotational velocity and acceleration as well. He has excellent comprehension of these concepts.
