Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Physics Tutoring review by Yush in Bridgeport, CT
Met with the student today for his second session. We talked briefly about his current status in Calc/Phys classes and we agreed that he should have a quick chat with his professors to discuss his current situation. Then we jumped right into solving problems again, this time reviewing exam 1 (kinematics & newton's law) and the corresponding book problems. After the session I assigned the student 3 problems, and he will email me his work . Once he gets his second exam back we will review that and the corresponding book questions as well. Turns out the professor pulls similar problems from the book and modifies them a little for the exam. So we agreed that the best way to prepare going forward would be to solve as many relevant book problems as well.

The student just had a quiz on chapter 6, so I started to teach him the concepts of chapter 7. Chapter 7 covers impulse, momentum, collisions, and center of mass. The concepts are pretty easy to grasp, but the math is a little bit more challenging. We tried some practice problems from his text book as we covered each topic.

We started by going over corrections for his geometry test. We then went through three physics labs related to work and energy, constructing a bridge, and power. He has a good idea of the general concepts.

Physics Tutoring review by Zachary in Bridgeport, CT
Tonight we reviewed the student's physics homework. We started off very slow and by the end I had him working problems and talking me through his solutions. He is very good with physics and he even surprised me tonight! I asked him if what we had calculated was the average or instantaneous velocity, and he said average because the time change was so large!! Brilliant! At the end, we worked some algebra problems, mainly one- and two-step linear equations. At the end I told him about calculus and showed him a few of my favorite puzzles and ways of thinking. I think it is important to show him that these higher-level classes are nothing to be afraid of by name.
