How can Phonics tutoring help you succeed?

Varsity Tutors is happy to try to help you find an independent phonics tutor in Tacoma. Whether your child is having trouble with vowels, consonants, blending, or another part of phonics, a skilled tutor might make all the difference. It's well worth having your child put in extra time with a tutor now, as it might give them a significant advantage over their fellow students in a critical subject. Phonics is the backbone behind reading and writing, so making sure your child builds strong phonics skills might continue to pay off when in their future reading and writing courses.

An expert phonics tutor in Tacoma, WA, could help your child make the most of their study time. The tutor will start by seeing where your child stands currently in terms of phonics knowledge, looking in particular at their educational needs and any areas where they're struggling. Using this information, the tutor can build your child a personalized study plan that aims to try to improve their knowledge and fixes up any weak points, while catering to their preferred learning style. Unlike the classroom environment, where teachers have to take a one size fits all approach, the tutoring experience completely revolves around your child. In every tutoring session, they receive immediate feedback and constant guidance from their tutor, keeping them on the right track.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Mary Elizabeth in Tacoma, WA
The student first completed a warm-up activity over capitalization, and then we delved into a lesson on it on my laptop. After each slide, he corrected a sentence on the mini whiteboard that I brought along and capitalized the correct letters. After the lesson, he corrected all of the capitalization errors in his essay. We then talked about his essay, and even though he had expressed some concerns over it, it was pretty good! We wrapped up the session by reading some of his ACT book, specifically the section over the English strategies. For homework, he is to complete two worksheets on capitalization and another draft of his essay. Next session we will cover commas.

In this session, the student and I worked through his homework assignment (basic geometry, involving differentiating between different types of shapes) and then moved on to writing exercises and sounding out different words (i.e. through the use of his sight words and others). I did not see any scores or grades to note progress during this session.

Phonics Tutoring review by Sonya in Tacoma, WA
Today, we reviewed her last poem and then discussed line breaks. Since line breaks are what separate poetry from prose, mastering them is important in order to set her work apart and keep the language musical instead of flat. We talked about the line breaks in several different poems, and then she took a poem where I had removed the line breaks and inserted her own. We compared it to the original. Finally, she wrote her own poem for the week, and is going to plan the line breaks accordingly.

Phonics Tutoring review by E. Alexander in Tacoma, WA
The student and I met this morning to cover a couple of different bases. We started with the PowerPoint slides for a talk she attended, breaking down the narrative and preparing her to write an extra credit essay on the talk. Then we discussed the introduction to her research paper--she decided to re-write and incorporate an anecdotal start, telling a story to introduce her main ideas.

Phonics Tutoring review by Lana in Tacoma, WA
We covered the student's cover letter including formatting and suggestions for improving its strength. I thought the session went very well. The student had a well written, easy to read letter. I gave him a lot of notes about making it stronger including making it more concise, providing more concrete examples, and making it more relevant to the company. I left him with suggestions for revisions about formatting and content. I'm going to email him my notes. He'll send me a revision in .doc format before our next session.
