Private In-Home and Online Phonics Tutoring in Sunrise Manor, NV

Receive personally tailored Phonics lessons from exceptional tutors in a one-on-one setting. We help you connect with in-home and online tutoring that offers flexible scheduling and your choice of locations.

Without phonics, decoding words in a text, and ultimately learning how to read fluently, is not possible. Your child must be able to connect the actual sounds associated with letters and words. These phonemes are critical to the early learning process. Once your student develops phonemic awareness, they can expand their reading potential, because they know how words look and can learn by sounding them out. Phonics takes longer for some students to learn than others. An expert phonics tutor in Sunrise Manor, NV, can help meet all of your child's studying goals. They can implement techniques such as sound to word matching, word to word matching, and initial or final consonant blends. Phoneme segmentation is another, in which the tutor asks what sounds your child hears in a word.

Phonics is a building point for not just reading, but for excelling in every other academic subject. Your student will also need the skill for acing upcoming exams, whether it is the Smarter Balanced Assessments, End of Course, or ACT exams. An experienced phonics tutor in Sunrise Manor can present your student with multiple teaching approaches, until they find the one that works best for them. In short, the tutor will work with your child's learning style. They can adapt their study plan to your student's individual weaknesses, and target these specific topics in a personalized study plan.

Your child's tutor can meet during the school day. The instructor is also flexible enough to teach later in the evening or during the weekend. They understand your child may have a busy school and activity schedule. Whether learning at home, at a library, or online, in which face-to-face remote lessons are guided by a live learning platform, your child could be taught phonics. Assignments, quizzes, and homework could help assess their progress, so the tutor can confirm they are on track. Whatever their needs, Varsity Tutors is happy to try to help your student find an independent phonics tutor in Sunrise Manor.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Marcelle in Sunrise Manor, NV
After becoming acquainted with this student, I made a hopscotch spelling game for her to do today; this was based on her kinesthetic style of learning. At first she was afraid to try because it was new to her and she felt that she would not do well at it. I used my pet to persuade her to try. I said that he wanted to see if she could hopscotch his name. She agreed because she really likes my pet. I'm finding that if she is afraid or refusing to try something, I have to give her a few minutes and change the subject to something else, then come back to the idea from a different perspective. For instance, when I asked her to try the second time, I mentioned that it was for Spike (the pet) and not for me or her mother.

The student showed me her ACT results--a 27, which isn't too bad. She has another opportunity to take the exam this year, so we will probably be working on that later. We reviewed an essay she had done, and talked about what she could have done better (poem analysis, citing specific examples, etc.), and then analyzed a few poems.

Phonics Tutoring review by Jo in Sunrise Manor, NV
Today we studied both math and spelling words. We began with a short math game that matched the shape to the geometric name. The student then worked on spelling homework. We ended with a game of Go Fish in which 2 cards of the same number and color made a set. When a player made a set, she and I competed to see who could multiply the 2 numbers together first and correctly. The player who got the correct answer first kept the set.

We spent the entirety of the lesson working on math (areas and perimeters). The student told me that she was the only one who knew her formulas in math class that day thanks to the memorization drills I had her do in the previous lesson.

During today's session, the student and I spent a majority of our time working on her assigned reading and summary. When I arrived, she already had several sentences of the summary completed. We worked together to build a thorough summary, and I took time to teach her about sequencing and organizing her writing. We also talked about how important it is to pay very close attention when reading and to look back if you don't remember. She then did research for her biography assignment. She said she was interested in Nikola Tesla, so she spent the last 15 minutes of our session doing research on the inventor and writing brief notes.

Phonics Tutoring review by Taylor in Sunrise Manor, NV
The student and I simply picked up where we'd left off, working on a personal statement for a college scholarship application. I spent the first part of the lesson editing the new text he'd written, taking every possible opportunity to remind him of the grammar rule in question, such as why to use past-present tense instead of simple past tense or why to put a comma before an appositive phrase or after a dependent clause. My other job was mainly to prompt and stimulate his thought processes, specifically, to draw out the "why" factor in his essay. I let him write for uninterrupted periods of time, and then I edited for grammar and offered feedback on content. We're very close to having a final product.
