Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Sherry in Round Rock, TX
The student's research paper for her Music Appreciation class is due today, so we met last night to be sure her essay was ready to submit. While she still has some issues such as comma splices and similar concerns in her drafts, she is now able to recognize those (for the most part) through her own editing process, and has made good progress. Her essay is well-organized and thoughtful, and appears to adhere to the assignment requirements and feedback provided by her instructor. She is contemplating taking another English class for the summer semesters, and would like to continue our sessions when she has additional writing assignments to complete.

I started working on editing the student's final public policy paper today. We got about 2/3 the way through working on grammar and sentence structure. We will finish the rest on Friday, and I might propose some paragraph rearrangement for a more cohesive/flowing narrative.

Phonics Tutoring review by Charles in Round Rock, TX
The student and I met to discuss an essay he was writing for an honors program application. Of two essay prompts, he chose the one concerning big picture stuff, humans' place in the universe, etc. We first brainstormed a bit about the topic, then divided the thoughts into core ideas, and finally we outlined the three key concepts in paragraph form. To end the session, he worked to write a rough draft of the second paragraph. Additional paragraphs will be assigned for later editing.

The student and I finished rocks and minerals. I rewarded her with a sticker every time she went back and reread, every time she corrected herself in order to read fluently, and every time she made a connection. She did very well with mid-sentence page transitions!
