How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Adequate reading skills are a must for student success. Reading is present in all reaches of academia, and it only gets more intensive as students progress through the grade levels. Without solid reading skills, a student would likely fail in their educational endeavors. Learning how to read begins with phonics, and a student's level of success in phonics is indicative of how strong of a reader they will become. That is why it's crucial that students who are falling behind in phonics get the help they need early on. Fortunately, this help is readily available in the form of personal tutoring. If you want to try to help your child overcome their learning obstacles and successfully understand phonics, consider partnering them with a personal phonics tutor. A phonics tutor could help them review the material in a way that makes sense to them. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors could help you find a phonics tutor for your child in Mesa, AZ.

A skilled professional phonics tutor in Mesa can give your child much needed one-on-one attention. As your child works one-on-one with a personal phonics tutor, they will be amazed by how easy it is to ask questions and share their concerns. Their tutor will always respond with insightful, valuable feedback that serves to bridge the gaps in your child's comprehension. This direct communication between tutor and student is hard to find in the classroom, where educators often don't have the time or resources to address every student's individual needs. Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Jessica in Mesa, AZ
Because the student had a reading comprehension assignment due on the next day, I decided to focus on assisting the student with completing the assignment. First, the student read the book aloud to me. The book was about the history of the White House. Second, after the student finished reading, I required him to give me a summary of what he read. Third, in order to complete the assignment, he had to write a one-page summary about the book to demonstrate that he comprehended the reading.

The student did a good job today. I can really see him taking the initiative to be prepared for our sessions. He is taking his reading a bit slower and is making a sincere effort to improve.

Phonics Tutoring review by Claire in Mesa, AZ
At this session, we discussed the section of Harry Potter that the student had read since our last session. In this section, Harry and Hermione were caught after bringing Hagrid's dragon to the top of a tower to be taken by Ron's brother's friends; we discussed how Harry might have been feeling after he was caught. Not only does he feel upset that nobody is talking to him at school, and that he's gotten detention, but we discussed whether he may also have some pride in his house, and may feel bad at having let them down. We also discussed the other books she is currently reading, in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. We will read these together when we finish Harry Potter. I am hoping that this series, which she has become very interested in, can hold her interest long enough to read a book from start to finish and discuss it with me.

Phonics Tutoring review by Denise in Mesa, AZ
Student has shown fantastic progress in ease and confidence in reading out loud. She's improved markedly in her ability to phonetically sound out words and successfully remembering some irregular pronunciations. This is the area where I'm going to focus more in the future.

Phonics Tutoring review by Gwen in Mesa, AZ
This was the first lesson after many months. The students worked reviewing what we look for to find out the main idea of stories. We also reviewed vocabulary words, sharing made-up sentences of their usage. The girls are wonderfully verbal and I work to elevate their higher level thinking. They rise to the occasion. Uplifting lesson for us all.

Phonics Tutoring review by Morganne in Mesa, AZ
We read several short passages. The student was able to read and retell from all of the passages. She struggled with the O level passages' vocabulary but could understand the general idea of the text. I noticed while doing this exercise that as soon as she identified the passages as being like school her reading fluency became very staccato and she wasn't reading for comprehension. When asked she stated that she was focusing really hard to be sure she did well. We ran into a similar issue when she was asked to tell events chronologically (she was worried she would mess up). When I told her order didn't matter she related the events chronologically in great detail. I feel that the student needs to continue to work on developing interest in reading; building confidence in responses to retelling questions, and finding a balance between reading slowly for comprehension and reading too slowly to affect fluency.
