We started the new spelling unit. The student did very well in reading the passage which introduced the words and in completing the following exercises. One exercise is always on proofing, and he was particularly involved in that. He enjoyed approaching it as a "detective," looking for clues in the sentences as to what could be wrong. He did a very good job of finding the errors in the sentences, i.e., misspelled words, capitalization, and punctuation. We practiced the new words and I asked him to go over them before our next session. Dependably, the student was hardworking and very pleasant. I also reminded him about slowing down in his reading and in completing exercises. He seems to be trying hard and it has helped.

I had the student read her assigned book "Don't Worry Bear," and she did a great job, so we retired that book (though we are still working on pronouncing "caterpillar" and "worrying" correctly). I then assigned her two new books, "Henny Penny" and "Breakout at the Bug Lab." I also gave her a short spelling test, which she did okay with. We will be focusing on spelling "chair", "as", and "ask". We then reviewed addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems aloud and on paper. She has gotten a lot better at doing these problems. Lastly, I assigned her a new list of words to learn, as well as assigned her to continue practicing the words she recently learned. I had no concerns from the session, as she is improving and working hard.

We began with a series of word problems, which I asked the student to write out the equations for and show his work. From here we moved on to a little basic algebra. He was able to solve them all. We will continue to work on this. Finally, we moved on to reading comprehension. First, we did a details-based passage, and I asked him to sum up the main idea. Then we worked on a passage with a lot of vocabulary for him to define, where his only issue was occasionally being too vague, which we adjusted. We ended with a fun fiction passage, and with his interest and creativity piqued, he gave very specific, interesting answers.

In this lesson, the student read the book "Diary of a Worm." Overall, she did a good job decoding words in the book. She does much better at decoding when she quickly sounds out the word letter by letter, so I have been encouraging her to increase her pace. Doing this makes it easier for her to hear the sound each letter makes and blend them into a word. Before reading, I had her make predictions about what the book was about, based on the cover and the pictures. While she read, I asked her comprehension questions, and she gave good responses. At the end of the lesson, I reviewed how to sound out words with a double "e" and words with an "ea" combination that make the long "e" sound.

The student worked on her math and spelling homework. For math, she had to figure out how many base tens (tens and ones only) there were and rewrite the number after breaking it down into tens and ones. She had no difficulty with this, this was practiced last week in our session. For her spelling homework, she wrote each of her spelling words in a sentence. We worked on capital letters at the beginning of each sentence and the spelling of unknown words. For the rest of the session we worked on supplemental addition up to 17 with and without using her fingers. She got only 3 wrong out of 45! She also read her sight word lists. She is almost finished with each list up to the third grade level. She has 5 words to go on each list to have them all completed. We are going to try the next list of nouns. We reviewed what nouns were and she was very excited to start this next week.

We focused on diphthongs-specifically oi/oy and ou/ow. Oy is easy and she had little problems with it. Ow is a bit trickier because it can occasionally be long o, but she mostly grasped it. We also reviewed a bit the long and short vowels, and she's pretty comfortable with those. In our next session we will finish ow and then work on r-controlled vowels, which should go pretty quickly. She has definitely improved a lot since our first session.
