How can Phonics tutoring help you succeed?

If your child is struggling with phonics, you may be unsure of the best approach to help them. Perhaps they understand the basics, but can't grasp advanced material, such as phoneme deletion and decoding. Or maybe they feel stuck even on remedial content, like word to word matching or understanding short vowels. Instead of watching them attempt to keep up with the rest of the class on their own, consider giving them their own personal phonics tutor, who could break down information as well as cheer them on. Varsity Tutors can match your child with an excellent phonics tutor in Glendale who will strive to ensure they have the tools they need for success.

Phonics is a crucial part of vocabulary that is used in all schools, and it could help your child as they take advanced classes, such as college vocabulary. Understanding the concepts that are taught in phonics is needed for advanced reading and writing. Phonics skills will also be needed in order to potentially improve on standardized tests, such as AzMERIT. A skilled phonics tutor in Glendale, AZ, will take your child's interests into account to create engrossing study sessions that keep them focused and engaged the entire time. Your child's tutor can offer assistance like visual aids to show how many syllables are in a word, as well as show your child how to use mnemonics or different ways to memorize what they learn in phonics class.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Kyra in Glendale, CA
I began Student 1's lesson by reviewing her spelling and vocab words, which she showed great improvement with. Afterwards, I gave her a few grammar worksheets, based on adverbs, to see her current understanding of them. Finally, I taught her how to create a more detailed writing outline, and together we worked on a writing prompt. For Student 2, I started the lesson by reviewing her vocab and spelling words for the ISEE test. Afterwards, I reviewed her essay from last week with her, and discussed all the ways in which she could improve. Finally, I had her complete a reading portion of an ISEE practice test, which I will grade next week, and discuss the results with her.

Phonics Tutoring review by Isak in Glendale, CA
I met with the student for the first time and talked a bit with her and her mom about her needs for the upcoming year. I then helped her on a summer reading and writing assignment that she had. She was to read a novel and then answer three prompts, so I went through her essay to correct her grammar, help her with clarity, and give her tips on content. She is a fairly good writer and her essay made sense, and she caught on pretty quickly and understood all the corrections I made.

Phonics Tutoring review by Kerry in Glendale, CA
The student and I continued to work on a review of the student's large English assignment. He had made some progress on his own with the poem (one of the sub-assignments), and also benefitted from additional brainstorming. We did some line-by-line editing of confusing sentences and word choices. For his "article," we built an outline together, and began to build a rough draft. The student did well organizing concepts in a logical sequence. He continues to be more challenged by grammar and spelling, although he is usually able to provide a correction on his own once I highlight an area with an error.
