How can a tutor assist you in conquering Phonics?

You've been hoping it's just a fluke, but now you're forced to admit that your child seems to have a lot of trouble with phonics. When you see them trying so hard to sound out words, it breaks your heart. So, what can you do? You can read along with them and sound out words together. What you should do is get help from a professional tutor. Here's where we come in. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors are well-versed in helping students in Fairfield find phonics tutors.

Phonics involves learning how to attach meaning between letters and the sounds they represent. This, in turn, leads to decoding, when children are then able to understand the meaning of individual words and full sentences. Great concentration must be placed on phonics during the early grades or children will have a lot of difficulty with more advanced reading as they get older. Even with this early emphasis, some students may have a considerable amount of trouble. If your child is really struggling with phonics, it could be that they aren't responding to how the subject is taught at their school. A different perspective can turn that struggle into a gain.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Kyra in Fairfield, CT
I began the student's lesson with a reading comprehension; the student struggled to stay focused but when she did, she read very quickly and completed the questions fairly accurately. Afterwards, we reviewed her spelling and vocabulary words; to her surprise, the student remembered more words than she thought she would and I was able to introduce her to a few more new words. Finally, we wrapped up the lesson with a review of nouns/verbs/adjectives, which the student completed without a problem.

We continued to discuss Macbeth, focusing on theme. We also practiced quote identification and made sure the student has a strong grasp on the overall plot. We also covered two poems -- a Shakespearian Sonnet and "Out, Out" by Frost, as it contains a direct allusion to Macbeth in the title. Finally, we covered literary vocab terms to ensure that the student was up to speed on all the appropriate terminology.

We worked on a number of short reading passages to help the student connect using supporting details to come up with an original main idea. Much better with history and science passages that involved rote memorization.

We reviewed what we did on Monday. The student is making progress, but still needs to work on her verb conjugation skills. Most of all, she needs to remember the different verb tenses and pronouns. We will be focusing on understanding when to use I vs. me, and other subject vs. object pronouns like they/them. However, she has already improved.

Phonics Tutoring review by Tara in Fairfield, CT
We reviewed the student's goals and the specific areas he would like to improve. Then we made a plan for how to proceed, focusing on reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, and study skills. He gave me a writing sample to evaluate, and I gave him a short story to read before the next lesson. He will make a note of any vocabulary in it he doesn't know, and will eventually write an essay about it. I will also review the academy exam study guide to see where we should focus our attention. I suggested he make a specific schedule for himself with how much time he can devote to studying every day. I also encouraged him to write out his long and short-term goals, so he knows why he's doing all this extra work. I will also give him a list of suggested readings.
