How can a Phonics tutor help you?

In order for a student to be successful, it is imperative that they know how to read. Without solid reading skills, students will struggle to keep up in their classes. This problem will only get worse as they advance into higher grade levels and begin to take more complex classes. That's why it is crucial that students develop good reading skills early on. Developing these skills largely starts with the study of phonics. Students who successfully understand phonics are more likely to succeed as readers. Although phonics is an important first step in a student's journey to reading success, it's not always easy. Some students struggle with the concepts they learn in phonics, and they need extra time and assistance. Fortunately, students don't have to tackle phonics alone. If your child is beginning to learn how to read, consider connecting them with a personal phonics tutor. For help understanding your child's phonics course in Castle Rock, CO, contact one of the educational directors at Varsity Tutors.

An expert phonics tutor in Castle Rock can develop a study plan to try to help your child make the most of their abilities to try to succeed in their course. Regardless of your child's skill level, or what areas of phonics they are struggling with, their personal phonics tutor could help them overcome their learning obstacles and achieve success. They'll review things like phoneme counting, blending, and sound-to-word matching with your child until you're confident that your child understands. If your student is having difficulty with hearing and making rhymes, or perhaps consonant digraphs, their phonics tutor will patiently work with them to address their areas of confusion.

We began with an introduction to Julius Caesar, which the student's class will begin after spring break. I showed her a useful online glossary of Shakespeare's language. Afterward we turned to an in-class persuasive essay which she will have to write in response to the prompt, "Should facts or intuition primarily determine of our decisions?" We outlined the major points she wants to make and discussed her rationale.

During this session, I helped the student study for her upcoming English exam. For the most part, she understood must of the material. She continues to work on pronouns and the different types of sentences (simple, complex, compound, etc.). To help her prepare, we completed her workbook practice on these subjects. I also found extra practice worksheets online and we completed these for additional practice.

The student and I worked on a summary of Part 1 of the Odyssey for her online assignment. I discussed the importance of using the active voice and incorporating transitional words. After she submitted her summary, she took the test for the Odyssey unit. She felt accomplished because she finished the unit. Then, we transitioned into reviewing for her next unit test on Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest". For her homework, she needed to complete that unit test. Moreover, I discussed her homework assignment with her mother.

Phonics Tutoring review by Tranika in Castle Rock, CO
We reviewed all the terms the student had learned up until this point--some he understood more than others. For those he didn't know as well--concepts newly introduced--we spent time on each one individually. I taught him a few tricks and easier ways to retain the new information. He seemed to have a better understanding of the material as I verbally "quizzed" him on each one, asking for the definition and example of each.

Phonics Tutoring review by Margaret in Castle Rock, CO
The student and I read the first part of Rocks and Minerals, an N-level book by Ann O. Squire. The focus of the session was on helping her to be more self-monitoring with her comprehension. To do this we focused on her reading and every time she used a strategy or made a connection she got a sticker for her "Smart Reader" card. She relished earning stickers and was doing an excellent job self-monitoring as a consequence.
