How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Because phonics is the cornerstone in learning to read and spell, it is important that your child is guided by someone passionate and experienced in the subject. If your student is struggling with reading, spelling, comprehension, or more, reinforcing the foundation of phonics will put them on solid footing toward success. That is why having a phonics tutor for your child can be such a valuable tool for their educational future. Varsity Tutors can assist you in locating a private, professional phonics tutor in Baltimore, MD.

A professional phonics tutor in Baltimore, MD, can create a study plan specifically designed for your child. Each learner approaches phonics differently, and they can be strong in some areas, while needing help in others. For example, using analogy teaching methods, students can start with short, familiar words to reach up to more difficult words. Other students learn better with embedded phonics, approaching words from within their context to gain understanding. Working with a professional tutor located by Varsity Tutors means working with someone who can tailor phonics learning for your student. A phonics tutor in Baltimore could break down the most complicated concepts in a way that is easy for your child to understand.

Phonics Tutoring review by David in Baltimore, MD
The student had to write a 5-paragraph essay on characteristics of an archetypal hero after reading such stories as Beowulf and the Iliad. He had to choose 3 specific characteristics of a hero and explain how a character from each story possesses the characteristics. Also, the essay had to describe how the characteristics chosen have been used by different people and cultures throughout history. I assisted him with creating a brainstorming outline and rough draft for the essay and he chose the characteristics of strength, bravery, and honor to describe a hero. Once the rough draft was complete he planned to type the final draft the next day and said he felt confident that he would earn an acceptable grade on the assignment.

Phonics Tutoring review by Alison in Baltimore, MD
The student has a creative writing assignment due in English. Given that organization and study skills is an area of focus for us, we spent some time planning out the tasks he would need to accomplish in order to complete this assignment. Then we figured out how he could divide up those tasks over the time he has to complete the assignment. The student already had a great idea for his story, and needed to organize his thoughts. Instead of just typing the story from scratch, I suggested we use his flashcards (kinesthetic learning tool) to create a "storyboard" for the story - giving him a tactile and visual representation of the structure he wants to give the story. French: The student completed flashcards for the verbs avoir, aller and etre. We reviewed the flashcards together, and I gave him some tips about how to use the flashcards most effectively. His task for this week is to complete a set of flashcards for the verb faire, as well as the week's vocabulary words.

Phonics Tutoring review by Andrew in Baltimore, MD
Today, the student and I went over his take home essay that was to be turned on the coming Monday. This prompt was rather complex and convoluted, as it was an analysis of the causes and effects of stereotyping on the person being stereotyped and the person doing the stereotyping. Many points had to be hit and many points have to be analyzed. I helped him develop a quick and easy way to outline an essay that pulls actual concrete evidence (quotes he wants to use to prove his point) from the texts, and then organize paragraph by paragraph where the essay will take the reader, rather than just type it and "see where it goes". This way he can also pre-write his topic sentences, transition sentences, and thesis all before even beginning to write the actual essay.

The student polished her draft essay today. Before our next meeting next time, she will type up her revisions and send to me to proofread. We will review my proofreading in our next session and then she will be finished with it. We also brainstormed and outlined her approach for essay B, focusing on the skills she learned and put into practice with her experience raising a guide dog. We will review this draft during our next meeting.
