Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Vidyavisal in Sunnyvale, CA
We went over paper 1. We also identified the challenging concepts for the student and went over some conceptual material especially in nuclear physics and electricity and magnetism. The student was enthusiastic and had most of the questions correct in the practice paper.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Helaina in Sunnyvale, CA
We reviewed for the student's upcoming test. For the most part, the test will cover dilutions and molarity as well as balancing redox reactions. We reviewed dilutions and how to do conversions when making a mixture. I reminded her the process essentially consisted of dimensional analysis and that she just had to pay attention to the information she was given and the unit her answer should be given in. After a few more problems, she appeared a lot more confident about the process. We spent the remainder of the session going over the half reaction balancing method for redox reactions. Conceptually, she was pretty solid on the material but sometimes lost track of how many hydrogens she needed to add or where the electrons moved. We worked on keeping a tally, and after a few problems she was doing very well.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Roald in Sunnyvale, CA
We began by reviewing refrigerators which, to both our delights, the student understood excellently. The concept of heat pumps threw her for a loop momentarily, until she realized it was a backwards AC unit. From there, we discussed why heat pumps are more effective at heating a house than a simple space heater, and why leaving the freezer door open to cool down your house doesn't work. She was eager to put this new found knowledge to work. We started with an easier problem, which she finished - no sweat. We then jumped to one of the challenge problems, involving freezing water to make ice, as well as rates. She was daunted only initially, before working a way to find heat capacities and heats of fusion. After getting the right answer, she was quite elated. We moved on to a double-challenge problem, involving an engine outputting work into a heat pump that shared the cold reservoir. We agreed to have a final session the following day, and to return to gas laws and Carnot cycles.

Today's session was spent working on material for the student's final. We split our time between electrochemistry, redox reactions, and intermolecular forces.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Zachary in Sunnyvale, CA
We worked primarily on the student's class titration lab work, and talked about acid base dissociation and factors that effect the accuracy of titrations. He isn't struggling particularly hard with any topic. He does benefit from a refresher on chemistry vocabulary terms. He was pleasant to work with and had a great attitude about the tutoring process. He was prepared and brought a good amount of material for us to cover. He was not left with extra practice but will be bringing back numbers for his chemistry labs so we can continue our work on them at our next sessions. I saw his previous chemistry work and checked over it, and it appeared to be very accurate and well written.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Matthew in Sunnyvale, CA
The student is beginning his exam preparation very early for this next exam and will consequently have much more time to get exposed to the underlying concepts that will be seen in the weeks ahead. With the insight gained from his first exam, I believe he will be able to concentrate his efforts on high-yield information to maximize the use of his study time. Today, we covered concepts behind acidity and what makes molecules more or less acidic. The main function group we discussed was carboxylic acids. This information will be a recurring theme in the remainder of organic chemistry, so I tried to provide ample examples of how acidity can be affected. We went through a few sample problems from the book and went over a few homework problems he felt unsure about. I will prepare a couple of reaction mechanisms to help clarify what is happening in certain reactions and send that information to him via email in the near future to help in his studies.
