Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Connell in Newport News, VA
Today I took the student through a homework problem set that was about stereochemistry. She really seems to be getting the hang of assigning absolute configurations, which I believe is one of the biggest hurdles of this unit. One of the questions required her to know IUPAC nomenclature, and she also seems to be making progress on that as well. I encourage her to continue working with practice problems with IUPAC nomenclature as well as Cahn-Ingold-Prelog rules for assigning priorities. I also recommend that she at least try using molecular modeling kits because, as we discovered today, it is fairly difficult to mentally manipulate 3D structures. I believe that a visual aid (although time consuming to make) may be useful in helping her get the hang of this 3D manipulation, at least while she is still in the learning stages when it comes to stereochemistry.

We covered chapters covering carbohydrates and carboxylic acids and esters. This includes all properties and reactions including these functional groups. The student was determined and took time to process things well and go through homework that was difficult, leaving other easier questions to figure out by herself. I am currently working on a study sheet and carbohydrates worksheet for her. From what I noticed, she is doing well in her homework.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Angel in Newport News, VA
Today we started looking at the reactions with aldehydes and ketones. We were able to refresh in our minds how you would synthesize ketones and aldehydes from alkene or alcohols. Then we moved into the reactions that involve the ketones as a reactant not a product of our inquiry. We had time to cover oxygen and nitrogen nucleophiles and the respective products that you get, and the mechanisms of the synthesis. As a recap and to strengthen student's synthetic skills, we covered a little bit of synthesis, including protection of alcohol groups when in reaction with Grignard and protection of ketones when in reaction with reduction reagents, such as lithium aluminum hydride.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Tavleen in Newport News, VA
Today the student worked on extra credit homework, covering oxidation and reduction of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids. We also looked at naming carboxylic acids, ketones, esters, and aldehydes, as well as examining their chemical and physical properties. Next, we went over reactions involving dehydration of alcohols, with the formation of the Zaitsev product. Lastly, talked about symmetrical ether synthesis involving the dehydration of two alcohol groups under acidic conditions. She is understanding the reactions better, but still needs to really focus on recognizing the functional groups and the reactants involved in oxidation and reduction of certain functional groups. Once she can recognize these reactions and groups, she will be well prepared for her upcoming quizzes and exams. Great job today!
