We started discussing the student's previous semester and how to improve going into this semester. She has developed a plan including a consistent work schedule to ensure she reviews the material more frequently. Her goal this term is a B- (she got a C+ last term). Today, we went over keto-enol tautomerization, knoevenagel condensation, alpha halogenation of ketones, alkylation of ketones, and thermal decarboxylation. We thoroughly went through those mechanisms and a few examples.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Elaina in Beaverton, OR
We reviewed three of the student's quizzes, focusing on the incorrect answers. The third quiz was where we spent most of our time reviewing. The concepts we focused on were naming and writing compounds, isomers, and hybridization. I gave her tips and tricks as to how to go about successfully answering the questions. Then we did problems from chapter 3 in her textbook which is where she needed help the most. After reviewing the quiz, she was comprehending the information much better and she was able to answer the questions correctly without much hesitation. There was much progress after the first session of tutoring.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Matthew in Beaverton, OR
Today was focused on a comprehensive review of all 4 chapters that will be on the student's exam tomorrow. I generated 4 pages of box problems that covered reactions with alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and benzene. We also focused on how to create mines and enamines using carbonyl compounds, how to react Grignard reagents with carbonyls, and how to make/use Wittig reagents.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Dana in Beaverton, OR
We worked pretty heavily on topics of imine and enamine formation as well as how to form carbon bonds, as that is the most energy intensive reaction that is undergone in organic chemistry as well as biochemistry. The girls are starting to get the process of how mechanisms work. My suggestion for them is to look on the Internet for extra practice problems or to call/text me and have extra problems be given to them. Organic chemistry is a language, and it needs to be practiced daily for them to understand it.
