Session Summaries by Organic Chemistry Tutors

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Bijin in Aurora, CO
Today was spent reviewing for the student's exam on waves, sound, and light. We spent the session going through a practice test provided by her professor. The topics covered included the properties of waves, standing waves, harmonics, wave velocity, light, diffraction, and plane mirrors. She has a good handle on the equations necessary, but will occasionally mistake which equation is applicable. We reviewed pretty thoroughly, and she feels confident about the material.

We spent our time together reviewing a table about organelles that she had to complete for homework. We agreed that this wasn't particularly challenging or exciting work, but hopefully it will make her workload lighter later in the week. I agreed to send the student any interesting articles about cell biology that I encountered online so that she would have more interesting material to learn from.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Jeby in Aurora, CO
Today, the student and I went over acids and bases for his test tomorrow. He had some difficulty answering multi-step questions. He didn't know how to approach them. I taught him some strategies that I found very useful when I was faced with those types of questions. I told him to simply the question by putting it into his own words before attempting to solve it. I also gave him some tips on how to approach acid base equilibrium questions without using the quadratic formula. Overall, I think the student has a good understanding of acid bases chemistry. He is able to think intuitively and critically about the questions.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Hayden in Aurora, CO
Today's session was used to discuss the quantitative aspects of electrochemistry. We focused specifically on the comparison of Gibbs free energy, the equilibrium constant, and the standard cell voltage. We then discussed concentration cells and electrolytic cells, and how they differ from one another. We finished the session by practicing both thermodynamics and electrochemistry with the questions provided by her professor. I am going to work with the student on making sure she is aware what equations are relevant for the questions provided. She did an excellent job with the thermodynamics aspect of studying, but I hope to have a little bit more practice with the electrochemical concepts that will be covered on the test. Since the test only covers what we have done, we will have plenty of time to practice in the near future. We plan to meet this Friday in order to continue our practicing of chapters 19 and 20.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Carin in Aurora, CO
The student seems to have a good grasp on this chapter's material, covering springs, the spring constant, energy and conserved and nonconserved forces. We went over a couple of problems and concepts, and she has the methods down. Her final will be comprehensive, and her teacher may cover some previous concepts in this next quiz, so the student is going to read back over some of the previous material, including that on work. She is optimistic about the next month.
