OAT Reading Comprehension Tutoring FAQ
The OAT Reading Comprehension assessment is one of countless reading comprehension sections that you may encounter on standardized exams over the course of your educational pursuits. Given that these sub-tests are so generically categorized, many students feel as though they have no idea what to expect. Passages presented in reading comprehension sections can span a wide array of topics, such as literary formats and time periods. Its associated questions can require both concrete and abstract analyses. The mental agility required to jump from disparate topic to disparate topic several times in just fifty minutes on the OAT can leave even the most talented test-takers exhausted. It is easy to see why this exam is highly valued by optometry admissions committees.
An optometrist must be able to read and understand a significant pool of information, from insurance regulations to scientific journals. As a result, if you truly hope to impress an admissions committee, a strong performance on the OAT Reading Comprehension section is critical. If you are concerned that your section subscore could jeopardize the integrity of your optometry school applications, consider enlisting the help of a private instructor. Each tutor has demonstrated exceptional aptitude on the OAT Reading Comprehension section, developing specific strategies and tricks for this test that can mean the difference between outstanding accomplishment and a mediocre performance. Instead of trying to teach yourself the ins and outs of this exam, build on the success of someone who has already been there. Do not entrust your preparation to generic review books.
OAT Reading Comprehension tutoring is available nationwide to help you achieve your goals on exam day. Not only has your tutor excelled on his or her own OAT test, but he or she also has a genuine enthusiasm for helping you do the same. This enthusiasm translates to your review in the form of tutoring sessions that are thoughtfully prepared and tailored specifically to your needs. You may be amazed at how quickly you can make significant progress with just a few sessions. A capable and dedicated tutor can cultivate a newfound confidence in you with regards to your OAT preparation. This confidence could be the difference between an average performance and a score that will impress almost any admissions committee.
Varsity Tutors' purpose is to connect students with the perfect instructor for them. Finding the right fit takes special consideration. It's a task the educational directors of Varsity Tutors are more than capable of. A local director will help you find a private instructor that aligns with your individual needs, ranging from short-term help on exams to semester-long assistance. The instructors you will be connected with are the cream of the crop. Only the best candidates make it through the platform's rigorous qualification process and background check. The tutors instructing you are professionals in their respective subject areas, having earned a bachelor's degree or higher. Academic mentoring options include in-person and face-to-face online tutoring. Personalized lessons can be taught to you in the comfort of your own home and on your own schedule.
Any pre-optometry student has an enormous number of additional obligations aside from the OAT. Not only do you need to continue to excel in coursework, but you also likely have extracurricular, professional, and community service obligations. All of these areas are critical parts of an application and they cannot be neglected. Clearly, the importance of an efficient and thorough review program is central, as you must have time for these other commitments. No other program can compare to the efficiency and impact of tailored OAT Reading Comprehension tutoring sessions. Contact Varsity Tutors' educational directors for more information!

It has been a while since our last meeting, so the student and I had to do some catching up about forward planning. We basically schematized out the topics we need to cover and the broad timeline for that (and the assignments that will go with each set). She is going to be adding hours. We had expected this to happen. After this initial discussion, we turned directly to new content. We focused during this session on the mean / median / mode style questions in the prep book and likewise went through several single-variable word problems. These two sections were assigned for next time as well as the first forty text completion problems in the prep book.
The student and I met for another session of GRE tutoring. In this session I first went over a diagnostic test that had been assigned for homework. We then continued to practice mathematics, going over more advanced algebra and doing basic functions.
The student and I went over his practice test. He did very well on the test and understood the problems he got incorrect. We then went over the sentence equivalence problem type and completed a few practice questions. For homework, I asked him to complete sentence equivalence practice problems and score his practice test.
I worked with the student on probability, statistics, and permutations/combinations. She is very charming and gave me some good background on her experiences. The biggest difficulty for her is knowing how to set up/target problems. I helped her to identify words that correspond to permutations compared to combinations (this can be very tricky!) and offered suggestions for additional practice beyond her study books. I look forward to seeing her next!
The student and I went over practice questions which she had completed which were mostly algebra problems. I then introduced a few new concepts- average, percents, mean, median, ratios, and a few other things. We specifically discussed how these topics are tested on the GRE.
The student and I reviewed a couple of math problems. We then turned to a quick review of reading comprehension strategies before starting sentence correction rules. We covered subject-verb agreement and part of verb tense.
