Middle School Math Tutoring review by Tiffany in Schaumburg, IL
The student's teacher had assigned him a 35-40 sentence math reflection to review his understanding of the units they have covered so far since this beginning of the year. He had already written the reflection piece, but needed some assistance knowing what types of numerical examples would be appropriate for each type of problem he had referenced. We went through each topic and discussed what type of problem might work best, and I made sure he explained his reasoning for each. For the remainder of the session, we reviewed the practice problems I gave him last week and examined two types of problems in the test prep book: multiplying repeating decimals, and using Venn diagrams to solve work problems. I had him attempt a few on his own, then we reviewed his work and discussed his reasoning (particularly on the ones he had missed). I provided two similar problems for him to try as extra practice. I asked him to pay particular attention to showing his work. We will go over these problems in the next session.

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Liz in Schaumburg, IL
We covered critical points, points of inflection, finding local extrema, concavity, and drawing a graph from this information. We also practiced writing this information down when shown a graph. We discussed asymptotes (vertical and horizontal) and reviewed finding limits as x and y approach infinity. We practiced this by working on his homework assignment. We worked on staying focused and I provided examples of how this information is useful in future courses. He enjoys physics so I often give him physics-related examples. I left him with three long homework problems to complete on his own. We had worked through one of them together and the other three were practice for him to pick up his speed.
