Session Summaries by Middle School Math Tutors

Middle School Math Tutoring review by James in Raleigh-Durham, NC
Great session with this student today. We focused almost exclusively on order of operations, concentrating especially on parenthesis-within-parenthesis (nested parentheses). He did exceedingly well with these questions, and will be able to move on to more advanced material next week. Remember: always feel comfortable asking questions if you don't understand something!

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Dina in Raleigh-Durham, NC
Today, we worked on converting percentages to decimals and mixed fractions. We also worked on percentage problems in various order. Finally, we put the knowledge to the test by using real-world examples. I introduced an easier method to working with percentages when a calculator could not be used that the student seemed to enjoy!

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Heather in Raleigh-Durham, NC
For this first session, the student and I mainly introduced ourselves. We did a bit of review on what the class just covered. This included multiplying and dividing by negative numbers, and converting between fractions and decimals. She did fine, and just needed clarification on how to tell whether the result is positive or negative. After that, I showed her the trick for multiplying 11 by any two-digit number, which she found cool. Overall, the session went well and I look forward to working with her on the next session.

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Matthew in Raleigh-Durham, NC
We worked on some worksheets from the student's classes focusing on finding least common multiples and greatest common divisors of two and three numbers as well as worksheets working with multiplication and division with decimals. He was already skilled at the calculations necessary, so we focused primarily on making sure that he was showing his work and taking care on the legibility of his writing. We also went over some methods of checking over one's work to try and catch errors. We ended the session working on distribution and how it relates to adding like terms.

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Angela in Raleigh-Durham, NC
I had fun with the student today. He's a great kid. We reviewed division, adding fractions, and drilled addition. Also, we learned about exponents and geometric nets. I have encouraged fact memorization. He should work daily on memorizing his multiplication tables, review edition 3 days/week and review subtraction on 3 other days/week.

Middle School Math Tutoring review by Matjaz in Raleigh-Durham, NC
Today we expanded on the linear functions, x and y intercepts, and finding intercepts from graphs and tables. The student completed the homework for the day. Then we went ahead and defined precisely the rate of change. First, on a generic x/y example, then on the example of velocity from physics. We emphasized that both rise and run must be evaluated by subtracting initial values from final values.
