MCAT Tutoring review by Michaela in St. Charles, MO
The student is excelling in the math portion, but still struggles with the English. I've noticed he'll often pick an answer before looking at all of the choices, so I've spoken with him about thinking through all of the answers. He'll often make mistakes that he notices when we go over the problems, and he'll mention that he didn't "see" the other answers. He says he usually has leftover time, so I've encouraged him to pace himself a little more, especially on the English. I've also worked with him on reading the passage and listening to how it sounds, instead of just how it appears. I explained that punctuation is the written form of natural pauses that occur in the spoken language. I think he can eliminate some punctuation errors by thinking about whether there would be a pause in the sentence.

We covered glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and phopho-pentose shunt.  The student is going to do a great job on his final--just make sure to get enough sleep and go slowly and methodically.  I am very confident the student has a very bright and successful future ahead!  It has been a privilege working with him.

MCAT Tutoring review by John in St. Charles, MO
The student and I went over math and writing again -- once I got the ball rolling for her on the problems, she had no trouble completing them successfully. Her vocabulary still leaves a lot to be desired and I've suggested she study that in between our sessions.

MCAT Tutoring review by Shannon in St. Charles, MO
The student had never taken a diagnostic SAT or seen the exam's format, so she took a timed exam to give her a sense of where she is. Her scores came out to 430 Reading/470 Math/410 Writing. She was relatively strong on sentence completion (vocab), algebra, probability, and improving sentences. She needs a bit of work on reading comprehension and making inferences, geometry, number and operations, and identifying grammatical errors in sentences. I'm looking forward to our work together.

MCAT Tutoring review by Lauren in St. Charles, MO
The student and I worked on organization and test prep this week. We focused our preparation work on reading comprehension, since the student is most concerned about that section. She has a fantastic vocabulary, and really only needs to work on recognizing the overall tone of passages, and identifying literal versus metaphorical descriptions. I also met with another student to work on exam prep. He is most worried about the verbal section. We talked about general test taking strategy, and practiced identifying roots, and good ways to guess the answer when he's unsure. We also talked about strategies for remembering words, like imagining a picture of the words definition, looking up new words as they're found in context, and physically writing out the definitions either in the margin of whatever he's reading, or on a "new word list."

MCAT Tutoring review by Paris in St. Charles, MO
I gathered some background information on the student regarding his needs going forward. He is a biochemistry major who describes himself as a bit fuzzy on physics but strong in the other subjects (chemistry, biochemistry, biology). He plans to take his exam in the summer. We also completed a few passages on an online learning site that concerned phase diagrams, pendulums, energy, and enzymes. Overall, he will need to really review his content going forward as he had forgotten some material in his basic sciences courses. He also tends to rush through the passages and in reading the questions, which leads to minor mistakes on his part. He does understand these points as well, and he knows it is something that he will have to understandably work on.
