Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

MCAT Tutoring review by Avi in Everett, WA
The student is in the last few weeks of her MCAT prep. I told her she was in a good position, but she is concerned with time management. I drew up a schedule for topics and tests to take until our next meeting. We went over her latest full length that she took. She is doing well on most of the content, but needs to stick to the strategies I have been showing her so that she will make less mistakes. We went over some specific strategies for experimental passages and in general chemistry, which tied into the passage mapping that she is practicing. I also showed her some more efficient study methods, such as taking scheduled breaks so she can focus. I emphasized a functional, overarching view of physiology.

The student took a practice test yesterday on which he scored a 36. Verbal was lower than previous tests as he ran out of time while implementing new strategies. We discussed strategies again and I explained that he will get faster as he practices. He was not worried and will complete the verbal self assessment and an additional practice exam prior to our next session.

The student completed the MCAT practice test 5 this week and we reviewed the passages she had most difficulty with. Her content knowledge has greatly increased and she is working on test-taking speed. Topics covered included molality, boiling point elevation calculations, reduction, anodes, cathodes, X-ray diffraction and transmission, cell cycle progression, tumor suppressor genes, tension calculations, acceleration of bodies hanging by springs, RNA splicing, anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, and polarizability of light.

We briefly covered acids and bases before moving on to organic chemistry. The student has a lot to study, but is in the midst of her final exams and so her time is divided. I told her to work through the material on her own, and to come to me with specific questions - I feel that this is the best use of her time.

MCAT Tutoring review by Fouad in Everett, WA
For this session, we reviewed a chapter in the chemistry prep book related to reduction and oxidation. We started off by reviewing basic definitions of oxidation and reduction, in addition to the determination of the oxidation numbers for elements in their different forms. We then talked about redox reactions and how to determine what compounds are getting reduced or oxidized in these reactions. In addition, we discussed the definition of reduction potentials and the calculation of potentials for cells using reduction potentials. We also reviewed the different types of cells such as galvanic cells, electrolytic cells, and concentration cells. Finally, we went over the thermodynamics of the different cells such as their spontaneity and free energy changes.

MCAT Tutoring review by Matthew in Everett, WA
Today was much more material-focused. We spent time covering topics in the Chem/Phys section of the MCAT that were of particular difficulty for the student. We covered circuits and capacitors, optics, fluid mechanics, and organic chemistry 2. She seemed to grasp the information well, as shown by correct answers to a variety of questions and question types. We are planning to meet again at the end of this week, where I will be testing her knowledge with a small quiz of my own, in preparation for a full-length test that she will take some time next week.
