In this session, the student and I went through a few math topics from her homework that were giving her issues. In particular, we talked about averages, rates, and percent change problems. We discussed how she should use the formulas associated with each problem, and practiced some different examples. We also practiced some geometry questions together.

MCAT Tutoring review by Ryan in Enterprise, NV
The student and I began by going over two practice essays she sent me. I read both essays and provided her some comments on how she may improve her score in this section. I focused mostly on improving organization, avoiding wordiness, and deepening her reasoning. After that, we went through a number of practice math problems. I illustrated how to solve and explained the math concepts involved when necessary. Overall, she is improving and learning to use new strategies like backwards solving and number picking.

MCAT Tutoring review by Paul in Enterprise, NV
The student and I began by reviewing a passage she had difficulty with in her own practice. We looked over the questions she had the most trouble with and reasoned together where the errors in her judgements came from. She also mentioned she was having difficulty with timing, so I gave her a couple of ideas of drills to improve her reading and mapping speed. We then moved on to work a couple of timed passages together in philosophy and art critiques, two topics she was noticing difficulty with. After this, we spent some time introducing the key equations and concepts behind fluids and then worked a few discrete and passaged based questions testing this knowledge. We will meet in a few days time to continue working through physics material, and any other obstacles she encounters in her studies.

MCAT Tutoring review by Ren in Enterprise, NV
The student and I briefly discussed the Writing and Verbal tests. The latter included discussion of a fantastic app for learning GRE vocabulary. We then turned our attention to reviewing Math as outlined in a chapter in the GRE prep book. We started from the beginning to help him relearn these topics on a conceptual level, not just rote memorization of steps to manipulate symbols. We accomplished a lot today that will serve as a foundation for future learning and mastery. For next session, I will email the student some suggested videos and problems for homework so we can get more mileage out of our time together.

MCAT Tutoring review by Elana in Enterprise, NV
The student and I completed 2 timed practice sets today: 1 verbal, 1 math. For the math set, he got 17/20 questions correct. He did a fantastic job pacing himself, which resulted in a really high score! He has also learned so many tricks for solving problems more quickly, and only made 1 silly mistake on a quant comp problem. This is a huge improvement. For verbal, he did fairly well on the vocabulary (he has been studying vocabulary a lot). When he got to the reading comp, he felt a little bit more stuck. He struggled with the first passage, which was very dense. As time went on, he felt more confident. Before test day, he is going to do a leisurely verbal review so that when he actually gets into the testing room he feels like his brain is already in the zone. We finished our session by doing exponent practice and talking about test day. For homework he is going to do more practice sets and he is going to focus on work problems, since those seem to make him most nervous.
