Math Tutoring review by Madelyne in Suffolk, VA
We started by reviewing his math homework. He had to solve a word problem then explain his answer. The problem was pretty basic, and he got the correct answer right away, however he had some trouble explaining how he knew that was the right answer. I helped him reach the proper explanation. I really want to encourage him to reach answers on his own, but because he is a little on the quiet side sometimes that takes some time. After that, I had him show me what he is learning in class. He mentioned that he was learning to tell time, so I worked with him a little bit on that subject before we moved on to reading. He chose to read a book which seemed to really interest him. He is improving a great deal in expressive reading and observing punctuation. I was very impressed with his reading overall, and after he finished the book I had him go back and practice a few passages where he got to practice observing various punctuation marks. He is getting the hang of it. I was happy with his enthusiasm for learning this week and I hope it continues. Student 2 also had some homework this week to work through. She had to answer questions about the book she is reading. She had some very insightful answers to the questions about why she had picked this book and why it was the perfect book for her. She has a little bit of trouble focusing when we actually read, though. I am going to try different things to keep her focus throughout the 30 minutes of reading time so hopefully she will remain engaged the entire time. We also continued to work on her multiplication tables. We started 8's this week. She is slowly committing them to memory. I would like to mix up how we learn them a little bit starting next week so she is more interested in it. Finally, she started learning division this week, so I had her teach me the lesson she had learned in class. I helped her visualize her division problems in the hopes that it will help her as she continues further in her studies. Both students are definitely showing improvement. The more that they can focus during our sessions, I am sure the more they will improve.

Math Tutoring review by Thomas in Suffolk, VA
Student 1: Today we worked on a conceptual understanding of multiplication and division. We worked on different strategies to solve multiplication and division problems (arrays, equal groups, bar models, skip counting, and repeated addition). By the end of the session he was connecting how multiplication and division is related. We also worked on some place value concepts which he has a fairly good understanding of. I told him to work over the weekend on using models to solve multiplication and division problems. Student 2: We worked on adding and subtracting decimals. She is good at this. We also worked on identifying prime and composite numbers. She is starting to grasp the concept. I told her to continue working on this over the weekend.
