Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Math Tutoring review by Sarah in San Bernardino, CA
This session, the student and I went over his algebra review (which he had already begun) for his test on Monday. It focused on quadratics and determining information from different forms of the equations. We practiced all concepts (finding vertex, vertex form, domain, range, axis of symmetry, minimum/maximum, y-intercepts, x-intercepts, zeros/solutions, and graphing) using different methods, and he seems very comfortable with the material. We also reviewed his Spanish vocabulary for an upcoming quiz and noted the words he needed to study in order to do well.

Math Tutoring review by Mitchell in San Bernardino, CA
We went over the fundamental theorem of calculus (FTC) and its proof. We also covered the mean value theorem (required to prove FTC) and Rolle's Theorem (required to prove the mean value theorem). We then discussed some of the theorems that result from the fundamental theorem of calculus, including the mean value theorem for integrals, the second fundamental theorem of calculus, and the net change theorem. Finally, we took a look at his homework problems and discussed which theorems applied to which problems.

Math Tutoring review by Richard in San Bernardino, CA
The student got a quiz back so we reviewed all of the problems he got wrong. This included a review of the mean value theorem and the extreme value theorem, as well as how to draw a function when given information about its derivative, critical points, etc. We then did a review of a few questions he got right but was still confused about involving trigonometry and the unit circle. Finally we did a review of continuity and what it means for a function.

The student and I reviewed for her exam by going over the end of her first practice exam and another practice exam. Despite issues in earlier sessions, she was understanding the error estimation problems and doing better with the different methods of deciding whether or not an integral was convergent or divergent.
