Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Math Tutoring review by Matthew in Highlands Ranch, CO
The student and I began our session by reviewing his packet for school of math problems. He had completed the sections that we'd agreed upon, and so we were able to look at the ones he had circled as difficult, or that he couldn't get. In some sections, we were able to take a pause and I showed him how to recognize certain patterns. For instance, he struggled at first with tri-nominal equations. After I'd demonstrated what the possible first steps could be, he was able to complete the problems that I'd written, and then move back to the math packet, where he completed the rest that he was assigned.

During our lesson today, the student and I continued from our last session with parent functions. We worked on a variety of problems with different parent functions, first identifying the different transformations involved and then applying these transformations to the parent function. Several of these problems were not only challenging but tricky, requiring careful observation in order to determine the transformations involved. We also found both the domain and range of each function. She is doing extremely well!

The student and her mother showed me her math grade online. We talked about different ways to bring her grade up to a C. She will fill out her planner and the resource teacher will send the homework assignments to the student's mother. Today we worked on redoing part of her summer packet. I taught her about supplementary and congruent angles and we finished the sheet of problems. Then, we reviewed Order of Operations for her test on Friday. I also quizzed her on her vocab. words.

Started off the session by helping the student go through some assignments focused on multiplication. He is showing a lot of improvement in this area, and is begin to understand the concept better. We then went through some multiplication flash cards I made for him. Finally, we covered long division again. He is showing progress here as well. I was able to show him how his improving multiplication skills are making the process of long division easier.

Math Tutoring review by Emily in Highlands Ranch, CO
During this session, the student and I did her error analysis for her most recent quiz and a review of some topics for her final test. She received an 81 on her quiz, so the error analysis went fairly smoothly. We identified her strengths and weaknesses so that we could further review those topics for the final, but overall it was a great note to start on. We then worked on test review. First, we went over some problems from her packet together. We worked on decimals, fractions, and word problems involving sales, ratios, fractions, circle graphs, probability, and unit bars. She remembered a lot of it. Then, I made her a full length quiz with the same topics modeled after the quizzes and tests given by her teacher, and I had her sit and take it with the same time restraints. We've been emphasizing working quickly and carefully, so these timed practices have really been beneficial for her. She earned an 86% on my test, which is helpful not only for building her confidence, but also for really targeting problem areas. Overall, this was a very productive session.
