The student and I worked on his "reflections" for a mock trial of one of the characters in The Lord of the Flies. It's very rapidly becoming apparent that his biggest problem is not unfamiliarity with the material--he has a phenomenal memory--or his writing, which is actually pretty good, but his lack of organization and foresight. I'm going to start really pressing him on this, because it's really the key issue.

The student and I covered reading comprehension. We discussed chapter 2 of the novel, The Outsiders, his assigned reading. I helped him understand the terms theme, tone, and characterization in the context of understanding and interpreting literary works. I also assisted him with identifying the primary theme in The Outsiders. We also discussed plans for reviewing the pre-algebra concepts and rules regarding the order of operations, integers, and number lines. He was engaged and attentive during the session, and displayed a positive attitude toward the material reviewed.

The student completed and we reviewed unit 4 vocabulary. I gave her a writing assignment to write a spooky story using six of the vocabulary words from unit 4. She showed a marked improvement from the last creative writing assignment I gave her. Though there is still much room for improvement in terms of grammar and usage, she made fewer mistakes and used all the vocabulary words, but one, properly.
