Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Amelia in Edmond, OK
This session, we covered verbs, and I think it really helped the student understand how to translate some of the different Latin tenses as well as what it means to conjugate a verb into the 6 different person/ number combinations. We addressed the present, imperfect, and perfect tenses, going through the stems that you use to form each one, as well as the endings unique to each tense and the endings shared among the tenses. By the end of the session, she seemed much more confident in identifying and translating verb forms.

In this session we focused specifically on comprehension questions that would appear on the student's test. I took a passage from Cicero's Pro Caelio and asked the student to answer comprehension questions about it. He had trouble with the vocabulary (which is to be expected having never read Cicero before). However, we went over several tricks for being able to determine the meanings of passages even if you don't know the whole translation. Afterwards we underwent a similar process for one of his old homework assignments.

Latin Tutoring review by James in Edmond, OK
Picking up from our last session, we spent about half of the session translating sentences containing deponent verbs from English to Latin. The student was able to properly translate them with my guidance and feedback. For the rest of the session, I wanted to bolster his understanding of how deponent verbs are conjugated. So, I had him complete a verb synopsis of a 3rd conjugation deponent in the indicative mood. I stressed the importance of him knowing not only how to form the verbs but also how to translate them.

Latin Tutoring review by Abigail in Edmond, OK
In our session this evening, the student and I focused on preparing for her upcoming test on verb synopses in the third conjugation. Her class has learned all of the possible forms of the Latin verb, so there is quite a lot of information to keep straight. I gave her some handouts that were organized in what I believe to be a very helpful, logical way. We talked over the hallmarks of each form, and I pointed out little things, like vowel changes, that can be critical on tests. We also discussed deponent verbs. Next, I asked her to quiz herself by filling out a synopsis for two third conjugation verbs. She did pretty well, but stumbled a bit on some of the passive forms. We continued reviewing those passive forms until she felt more comfortable with them.

Latin Tutoring review by Kelcy in Edmond, OK
The student had a relative pronoun quiz since we met last, which he did well on. I spent the entire session drilling him today. I started off by giving him Latin verbs and having him translate them into English, telling me person, number, tense, and voice. Then, I had him put English verbs into Latin. We then moved to nouns--I gave him simple sentences that he had to translate into English, then from English into Latin, working on identifying which cases and numbers were needed for nouns and reviewing the things we'd just done on verbs.

Latin Tutoring review by Kerry in Edmond, OK
The student and I had a great session tonight. He's taking the National Latin Exam this upcoming Wednesday, so I asked him which points of grammar he felt not so strong on. He chose deponent verbs, then the ablative absolute. He worked hard on both, and it was clear to me he was much stronger in both at the end of the session than at the beginning. Great work tonight!
