Languages Tutoring review by Holly in Kirkland, WA
Today we did an extensive review of SER y ESTAR while introducing new vocabulary and focusing on speaking complete sentences. We added descriptors such as "a veces", "bastante", "nunca", etc. and also practiced the negative form of the verbs. She easily grasps concepts and would benefit from more practice speaking out loud. I introduced another difficult irregular verb (TENER) and its present conjugation along with some new vocab. We practiced sentences out loud, differentiating between SER, ESTAR and TENER. Next week we will cover colors, numbers, and kitchen vocabulary while incorporating the verbs we have already learned.

We continued to create a "book" on the story of the student's life with her input. I review vocabulary form past sessions with her by incorporating it into our conversation. She is learning new vocabulary since the book we are writing together is in Spanish. She should review her book and practice past vocabulary.

Today the student and I went over his introductory Spanish class material covering the verb "gustar." He was confused over the conjugation and usage of gustar in sentences, as well as how to add indefinite articles, subjects, and indirect subjects to the sentence. As we went through the material together and I gave him strategies for sentence-building with gustar he steadily improved. I think if he keeps practicing he will have the material down flat.

Today, the student and I finished up the Test that I made up for him. It was a paragraph that was testing his reading comprehension. He did well, and I felt that he was ready to move on to the next sections in the book. We continued with chapter 9, and went over irregular preterits. It's a little bit tricky at first, but I think he was starting to get the hang of it as we went through the exercises. There are a lot of very different spellings that he needs to memorize, so I'll be making some additional flash cards for him to work on.

The student wanted to concentrate on reviewing what we went over the previous time, which was learning subject pronouns and verbs. Along with the subject pronouns, we reviewed etre, avoir, aller, and parler. We reviewed both verbally and in the written form. I will be sending him some worksheets to work on to help him practice and keep up on things.
