How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is an entrance requirement for some prestigious private schools. The test has three separate levels of difficulty: lower, middle, and upper, which coincide with the student's grade level. Over a span of three hours, students must complete five sections: reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, math achievement, and an essay. The exam requires students to have a wide understanding of each subject, as they are tested on several concepts within each section. If your student has struggled with math, English, or writing in the past, then the exam may prove to be challenging for them. However, with the help of an expert tutor, they can receive guidance as they prepare for test day. Varsity Tutors' educational directors can help you find a great St. Louis, Missouri, ISEE tutor for your child.

Every student may have their strong suit, but some students are also weak in certain subjects. A personal tutor can create a tailored curriculum that focuses on your student's needs. For example, if general math is a strong point for your student, but geometry has always given them issues, an ISEE tutor in St. Louis can work with them on geometric concepts in detail. A tutor can be a great way to help your child drill down into the subjects tested on the ISEE.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Abbi in St. Louis, MO
We talked a little about the student's likes/dislikes of school subjects and then I had him take a diagnostic test. He completed the verbal (synonyms and sentence completion) and missed very few questions. Then he did the math portion. He felt less confident about that section, but I did reassure him that the questions get more difficult further on in the section because it may be information he has not covered in school. Lastly, he took the reading comprehension section and only missed a few questions. Overall he did very well; we will target the math section and on getting a little quicker on the reading comprehension. We will also review overall test strategies and work to increase his confidence in his abilities.

Today, the student I and did some more vocabulary note cards and also looked at the sentence completion section. We read through the lesson and he completed some of the exercises. He had memorized all of his vocabulary words from the last two sessions and started to work on additional note cards. For our last session, we will look at reading comprehension.

ISEE Tutoring review by Christine in St. Louis, MO
The student and I had a great session today. We went over her essay that I had assigned for homework from the last lesson. She is doing very well with the essay portion- as long as she continues providing more detail, she will do great! She is also very strong on the quantitative reasoning and mathematics portions. We made sure to make a list of words that the student was unfamiliar with in order to define them.

ISEE Tutoring review by Miranda in St. Louis, MO
I had the student work through most of a practice test in the back of her book. She's getting much better at working through the math questions by herself first. She's also developing a better sense of the reading comprehension questions.
