How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

If your child is getting ready to take the ISEE, you might be questioning what kind of preparation is the best. Perhaps you are worried a test prep book isn't enough to get your child ready for the exam. Or maybe your child struggles with a subject that is on the test, such as math or reading. Varsity Tutors' educational directors are experienced at helping students in Somerville find independent ISEE tutors.

The ISEE is given to students in elementary through high school grades, and is used to determine admission into school. Students are tested on subjects they have learned over their academic career, such as reading, math, verbal, and quantitative reasoning. If your child is deficient in one of these areas, or would benefit in overall preparation before the test, tutoring is an ideal solution. A personal ISEE tutor in Somerville, MA, will be able to cater sessions to your child's preferences in a way that they won't get in a traditional classroom setting.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Claudia in Somerville, MA
Today we focused on timed practice sections of the verbal parts of the test - verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and I introduced the essay, which I will grade over the course of the next week. I had been planning on doing math today, but he did some extra English practice instead of the math homework I assigned him, so I can't really fault him for that! He's doing very well in the English department though, so there wasn't much room for improvement today; really we're just tweaking technique and improving vocab at this point. I've assigned him both the MA and the QR sections for homework this week, which it will be very important that he do, especially if he's taking the test next Saturday! Next week, we will discuss the homework and do extra math practice depending on what he's struggling with.

ISEE Tutoring review by Paul in Somerville, MA
Today the student and I reviewed the Quantitative Reasoning section of the practice test that he did for his homework exercise from last session. He got approximately 84% of his answers correct. Then we went over some synonym drills from the ISEE study guide. He got 7 out of 10 correct on the drill and for the 3 words that he answered incorrectly on the drill he will add 3 sentences to his homework assignment for next week, totaling 18 sentences for his homework assignment.

ISEE Tutoring review by Amy in Somerville, MA
We covered the synonym questions of the test, and looked at roots, prefixes, and suffixes for clues. We also discussed strategies for eliminating potential answers and "smart guessing" when he isn't sure what a word means. We did a couple of sample problems, and I wrote down words for him on flashcards to study. He is a friendly, hardworking kid who seems eager to ace this test.

ISEE Tutoring review by Catherine in Somerville, MA
Today we concluded all of the math topics that are on the ISEE. However, I noticed that many of the ISEE problems involve multiplying polynomials, so I began to teach her the methods of FOIL-ing. We also interpreted bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs and discussed how to tackle word problems and rate problems with proportions.

ISEE Tutoring review by Jordan in Somerville, MA
We focused on vocabulary, and also putting the finishing editing touches on her school admissions essay. We also discussed interview questions, such as "what makes you unique?" and strategized how she could answer these questions without using platitudes.

ISEE Tutoring review by Lynne in Somerville, MA
Today we reviewed factor trees, absolute value, greatest common factor, and least common multiple as part of our math review. We then worked together on writing an essay, as the boys have not had much experience in writing essays. Both boys had been to Hawaii, so we brainstormed ideas of why Hawaii was a favorite vacation spot. We had an introduction, two paragraphs stating why Hawaii was a favorite location, and a concluding paragraph. They were a bit surprised at the length of the essay, but I think they now have a better idea on how to write a good essay. We then worked on some synonym practice. We will continue to practice synonyms, review math concepts for this grade level, and look at various prompts for essays. With a few minutes break, they do well for their 2 hour session.
