How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

For any student applying to a top-performing private or parochial school, a test like the ISEE, or Independent School Entrance Examination, is likely required. The ISEE covers a variety of skills seen as necessary for success in these schools, particularly math, reading comprehension, quantitative reasoning, and verbal reasoning. There is also an essay that is not considered in the overall score, though it is sent to the school of intended application. As one of the primary criteria for admission into many of these schools, a great score is vital to ensure entry. If you want your child to have the best chance possible for acceptance, getting a tutor to help them prepare for the test is a great option.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Jackson in Silicon Valley, CA
The student had reviewed the vocabulary that I assigned to him extensively, and I was very impressed. During the session we examined probabilities, graphs, and ways to analyze data. I'm working with the student to get better at following formulas and standard procedure. He does well with problems that he can solve in his head already, and I believe that getting him to use formulas will improve his accuracy and assist him with more difficult problems. I spent the last portion of our session reviewing concepts from previous sessions.

ISEE Tutoring review by Sarah in Silicon Valley, CA
Today I wanted to get a feel for how well the student could read. He is only in kindergarten, so I wanted to make it fun. He really wanted to put together a new thing of building blocks that he had, so we opened it and took out all of the pieces. I placed all of the pieces on a sight word card and when we got to a piece that we needed he had to pick it up and say the word underneath and use it in a sentence or question. He could say each word that was on the cards and use them in complete sentences. He loved it! After we finished putting together the whole set he wrote a story that went along with our play. He continues to amaze me and I will continue to use higher level material as well as make it fun for him!

ISEE Tutoring review by Ramona in Silicon Valley, CA
We began by brainstorming ideas for writing prompts. As a response to the student's reading assessment, we worked on vocabulary. We worked through both fiction and nonfiction passages from an 8th grade state test using the test-taking strategies. We finished by reviewing math topics from the diagnostic assessment.

ISEE Tutoring review by Michelle in Silicon Valley, CA
We had a good session today. We worked on positive and negative numbers which is a new concept for the student and realized that we need to spend more time on this in the next few sessions. Her vocabulary is excellent and helps her with understanding the literature and reading questions. We will continue to work on see questions during our next session and mom is looking into reading Anne of Green Gables with her.

ISEE Tutoring review by Heather in Silicon Valley, CA
Today, the student and I spent today's session reviewing all operations of fractions and decimals. We also spent a portion of the session reviewing word problems that involve these concepts. She needed some review on finding a common denominator and dividing fractions, but she picked up on the concepts quickly. Occasionally she missed problems because she did not perform the correct operation (ex. she multiplied instead of divided). We talked about avoiding these minor mistakes. We also practiced using the process of elimination to find answers to problems that were a little more difficult. She was very focused throughout the lesson!

ISEE Tutoring review by Kristy in Silicon Valley, CA
Student 1 worked on in/out boxes with addition and multiplication patterns. She drew a great picture on the front page of the whiteboard. She is incredibly talented! Student 2 worked on bar graphs, in/out X boxes, and practice questions. Student 3 worked on bar graphs, too. He also worked on 3 digit X 1 digit word problems and division word problems with 2 digit divided by 1 digit. He was very proud of how well he did and the new math he learned! The children are always a pleasure to teach.
