How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Educational Records Bureau (ERB) created the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) to evaluate academic ability of students as it pertains to admissions requirements. The ISEE is for students in 4th through 11th grades. The exam has three levels geared toward 4th-5th grade, 6th-7th grade, and 8th-11th grade. The difficulty factor increases with each grade level. Your child can work with a professional tutor to adequately prepare for the exam and improve test scores. Let Varsity Tutors find your child an ISEE tutor in Santa Ana that has the experience, skills, and teaching approach to help him or her succeed.

Varsity Tutors will pick an ISEE tutor in Santa Ana who can work with your child's individual learning style and motivate him or her to succeed. All children are distinctive individuals who learn at a unique pace. Your child could engage with the tutor in a relaxed environment where he or she can speak freely. Any questions about the ISEE or related academic skills will be answered clearly and immediately. The tutor and your child could cultivate a symbiotic relationship with one main goal in mind: to increase the ISEE score. Your child could attend each session eager to meet with their tutor to work toward improving academic ability. The tutor can motivate your child to succeed by explaining the importance of doing well on the ISEE and how building a solid foundation could help him or her continue to pursue all academic goals.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Harrison in Santa Ana, CA
The student and I worked on the essay portion of the exam. I gave him a challenging prompt, and we worked together to develop an introduction, two or three supporting points, and a conclusion. In addition, we worked on several tactics designed to make an essay stand out among others. I feel that he is sufficiently prepared for his exam on Saturday. He has been a pleasure to work with.

ISEE Tutoring review by Katie in Santa Ana, CA
We began by reviewing the list of words that she looked at from our last session. For the most part, she did well defining and placing in sentences. We then moved on to sentence completions (which deals with similar issues). Again, she jumps to conclusions without attempting to fully understand the sentence, which we need to work on, but this quickness is not always a bad thing. Finally, we worked through some math problems. For the most part these were simple. For next time, I gave her another list of words and sentence completions, but we will focus on math (specifically on what she is learning in class right now).

ISEE Tutoring review by Darren in Santa Ana, CA
We spent some time doing some verbal exercises, focusing especially on choosing words that could complete the sentences and then looking for synonyms among the answer choices.

The student and I reviewed strategies and techniques for his upcoming assessment test. First, we reviewed the math portion. I emphasized to him how important it is to write down his work to void making simple mistakes. We also practiced timing for the math portion, and he did well with it. We discussed strategies for solving geometry and fraction problems specifically. We also practiced the synonym and analogy portion of the test. He knows when to guess on a question and when not to. We finished the session by going over the essay portion of the exam.

ISEE Tutoring review by Daniel in Santa Ana, CA
Today, the student and I continued building her English-Language Arts skills. We reviewed her notes from two chapters of The Cay, noting that after our last session working on note-taking skills, she had greatly improved in her ability to capture just the main idea. We discussed the 3 types of conflict found in literature - man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Adding to our list of literary devices, we discussed personification. We spent the majority of the session working on analogies, defining them, exploring different types of relationships that can exist between words, and then using her current vocab words to create analogies. Lastly, we reviewed these vocab words using her flashcards, asking her to provide both definitions and the words used in sentences.
