How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) was developed by the Educational Boards Bureau to determine a child's academic skills and potential to place them into an ISEE school. You want your child to receive the best education possible, which is why you have investigated independent schools in Omaha, Nebraska. Now, your child is scheduled to take the test and get into that independent or magnet school. Individualized ISEE tutoring in Omaha may help your child reach their goals on test day. Varsity Tutors pairs you with tutors who are experts in their subjects, and love helping kids like yours discover the joy in education. Going to an independent or magnet school in Omaha may mean your child has a greater chance of succeeding in their career, and to get there, it is important that they get personal attention when studying for the ISEE exam. The scores your child receives on these exams may determine whether they get into a competitive, intellectually stimulating grade school.

There are three levels: Lower, for 4th and 5th graders; Middle, for 6th and 7th graders; and Upper, for 8th through 11th grade students. These levels offer age-appropriate questions in five sections, with approximately three hours to complete each multiple choice and written section. Since each section is timed, your child must be comfortable with working on the clock, and an ISEE tutor at Varsity Tutors may help them develop that skill.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Zachary in Omaha, NE
The student completed a full ISEE since we last met. I'm still waiting to receive his scores, but we were able to go over some of the questions he missed on the quantitative section. His main issue was timing, so we discussed some alternative ways to estimate answers. We also went over algebraic word problems.

ISEE Tutoring review by Chad in Omaha, NE
After last week's session, I knew it was time to amp it up for the student as his ISEE exam is scheduled for January and he is looking to perfect his knowledge base. To this end, I created a practice test filled with basic and intermediate algebraic equations, division, fractions, and algebraic reasoning word problems. We used his dry erase board to show our work and we talked about an essay he is writing on his pet peeve.

ISEE Tutoring review by Corbin in Omaha, NE
For this session, the student and I worked on every section of his exam scheduled for the next day. We worked on his vocabulary, sentence completion, passage reading, quantitative analysis and math sections. I noticed that he was strongest on his reading and vocabulary. After continuously working with him to slow his reading down, he made significant progress analyzing his reading as well as his identifying his synonyms. His area of weakness was his math. His mother and I discussed this, with him being in only the second grade and not having learned many of the concepts, we formulated a strategy for him. At the end of the session, he made significant progress with his preparation.

We covered what kinds of questions are covered for reading comprehension, such as main idea, drawing inferences, drawing conclusions, tone, etc. We went into more in depth detail about essay writing and wrote the introduction paragraph of an essay to be continued next session. We worked on fractions, number place, and converting fractions to percent.

The student and I assessed her abilities today with some practice problems, and we reviewed the answers to these problems. We'll be focusing next time on verbal reasoning, new math concepts she has not seen before, and the essay portion. She was very attentive and a quick learner.
