The student had his first day back at school after the holiday break. Math: covered geometry, including lines of symmetry, perimeters of squares, triangles, and rectangles; measurement conversions (distance, volume, time, etc.), and word problems using these skill areas. Reading: Four reading passages scoring 85-95% on each Verbal: Completed the entire test section of Practice Test #2- The student continues to do better on harder synonym problems than harder sentence completion problems. Next session, we will time a section of the math test.

For math we worked on x and y coordinates and this was a newer concept for her. Mom is going to help her with that in person and I am going to see if I can find some fun things on the computer for her to work on. We started working on the main idea of passages in the science category and will continue to work on these next session. This was a more detailed type of passage and needs to have more time spent on them for practice. I am going to make some practice test for her to work on since we will not have a session next week.

Today we did a review of Algebra and ratios. The student generally is able to figure out the problems on his own, but does them in a very roundabout way. My goal going forward is to teach him the correct methodology. He is going to be on Spring break this week, so I assigned him a little more work than I usually do.

I started by reviewing the math concepts we had covered previously: decimals, fractions and percents. We then did some math multiple choice questions and reading comprehension practice. The student seemed well prepared for the exam by the end of the session and understood all the basic concepts.

Today, the student had his last testing tutoring session. First, we did some fluency practice. He read 2 paragraphs of a 4th grade reading passage, and I told him to concentrate on what he was reading to see if his words made sense in the story. Many times, if a student loses focus or mispronounces a word, that word does not fit in the sentence and makes the meaning strange. If students do not pay attention, they don't notice this problem and miss the meaning of the sentence entirely. Therefore, when the student read, he self-corrected 3 times because he caught himself saying words that didn't fit the sentence. We then practiced some reading comprehension strategies. He had the most difficulty with this because I chose a passage that he had little interest in. We discussed how, as a reader, you sometimes have to read about subjects that you do not care for. But, the goal is to find one interesting fact or purpose, and that makes the reading more exciting. In this particular example, the student read about the differences between annuals and perennial plants. After reading the passage and completing the reading comprehension questions, he mentioned that he would like to grow a garden with some annuals and perennials. Then, when the annuals die, the perennials spell a word based from where they were planted. Creative, and this thought hopefully made the passage more interesting! His ability to critically think through each question was average, but he had difficulty with the inferencing questions, mainly because he did not carefully scan for information throughout the passage. I think he still tends to rush and not think about each answer long enough to decide if it fits the question or not. However, after discussing with him throughout the exercise, his reasoning improved, and we cleared up some misconceptions throughout the passage. Then, we worked on some synonyms and sentence completion. I saw a HUGE improvement in the student's vocabulary, and his ability to find synonyms and missing words in sentences was fantastic. He could think of real-life examples to fit each word and also knew how to describe its meaning clearly. Finally, we ended with some last-minute reviews of test-prep tips, and motivational tips. His attitude towards the test was great, and I think he will do great if he takes his time and practices staying focused. We talked about how to refocus using some small, quiet body exercises that relieve tension and allows your brain to take a quick break. We also talked about some last-minute writing tips, including the strategies he used while he wrote his piece about no school for a day. We reviewed 5 sense details, onomatopoeias, and dialogue. Best of luck to the student on his test day! We will continue tutoring but will focus on specific writing genres he is currently working on in school as well as fluency and specific reading strategies.

In tonight's session, the first student and I worked on multiplication tables from 0 - 5, subtraction with borrowing, and word problems (addition/subtraction). She did a good job on 0x and 1x. She is still working on becoming proficient in 2x and 5x. She is able to subtract double-digit numbers when there is no borrowing. I had a visual for her about when to borrow in subtraction, which I will send to her mom and will work more on that concept with the student. The second student did all of his tables with no problems, as well as subtraction. He worked on multi-step word problems and found it more fun and challenging, so we will be working on that in upcoming sessions. The third student did great as well on all of his tables and subtraction. He did well on basic division and enjoyed the challenge of multi-step problems. He is quick to tell me if and when he needs help, but loves figuring out solutions on his own. All three were a pleasure to teach!
